Above - Once Over, Look Her Over’s first foal, won his biggest race in the 2014 Spencer Childers’ California Breeders’ Championship-RG1 - after breaking through the gates prior to the start and having to be re-loaded.
Her Over was the James V.A. Carter Award winner for Broodmare of the Year. While it was a great year from start to finish for Allred and Look Her Over, one late July night was especially outstanding.
Look Her Over was represented by seven offspring on the track in 2014, five of which were competing on California Breeders’ Champions Night. In addition to Once Over, Look Her Over produced Look Of A Dasher, who was second in the California Breeders’ 550 Stakes; He Looks Hot, who ran third in the Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2; and Take A Look and Dashing Over, the first- and third- place finishers, respectively, in the California Breeders’ Freshman Fillies Stakes.
Look Of A Dasher (si 94), a 2011 gelding by TR Dasher, also ran fourth in the 2014 Golden State Derby-G1. Through May 2015, he has a record of 16-2-4-2 with $44,984 banked. Allred still owns Look Of A Dasher, who is trained by Willoughby.
Look Her Over produced two more foals in 2011 – Overwhelmer (si 85) and Over The Top. Overwhelmer, a gelding by TR Dasher, is a winner of $10,460. The Separatist filly Over The Top went winless through five starts in 2013, earning $3,405.
He Looks Hot, Take A Look and Dashing Over are all from Look Her Over’s 2012 crop, which also included winner A Dashing Looker (SI-83, $8,243).
Above - Take A Look’s most recent stakes win was a wire-to-wire 1 1/4-length victory in this year’s La Pacifica Handicap
Left - He Looks Hot, Look Her Over’s leading money earner, gave Allred his richest win ever going wire-to-wire in the 2014 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1
When He Looks Hot ran third in the Governor’s Cup Futurity, it was behind
another Allred runner, Discontented. Allred
said at the time that while he was happy with Discontented’s win, he thought he’d like He Looks Hot better as time went on. As it turned out, he was right. He Looks Hot (si 93) returned to win the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, giving Allred his richest win ever.
“The way the horse was training, I didn’t think anyone would outrun him. In the paddock, he didn’t get upset, hot or excited. He was just feeling good. I was happy with how he behaved the entire time. He looked great during warm up and he stood perfect in the starting gate.”
He Looks Hot broke on top and held off all rivals to win the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity by 1/2-length, covering the 400 yards in 19.576. He became his dam’s leading money earner, with a record of 8-3-0-3 and $890,970 banked.
“I’ve had these old female families of Quarter Horses for years,” Allred said after the Los Alamitos Two Million. “I learned so much when I was younger from Spencer Childers. He taught me a lot about the female lines in the sport and their importance in breeding. I’ve patterned my breeding program after Spencer’s program based on those ideas.”
It’s a program that continues to pay dividends. In addition to her California Breeders
Freshman Fillies win, Take A Look (si 89) finished second in the Cash Rate Handicap in 2014, banking $23,901 for the year. So far in 2015, the Separatist filly has added a wire-to- wire 1 1/4-length stakes win in the La Pacifica Handicap and a runner-up effort in the La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3 to her record. Trained by James Glenn, Jr., she has a career bankroll of $78,085 through May.
Dashing Over’s (si 87) third-place effort
on California Breeders’ Champions Night
was her only stakes appearance in 2014. The TR Dasher daughter also won once last year, amassing $8,160 in earnings. Also hailing from the Glenn stable, she has added another win through May, increasing her bank account to $13,410.
Through 2014, Look Her Over had produced eight starters from nine race-age foals. Her offspring earnings surpassed the million- dollar mark last year and continue to rise as her 2013 crop hits the tracks.
Look Her Over produced five foals in
2013, all sired by Walk Thru Fire. Three of them – Hot Looker, Watch Her Walk and Stop Staring – have already faced the starter, though as of May 27 none had returned to the winner’s circle. Given the consistency of her first several performers, it’s a safe bet we’ll be seeing more from Look Her Over’s two-year-old crop as they march toward California’s fall futurities. After all, they’re carrying on a family tradition.
