P. 10

                   Dear Members:
COVID-19 really did a number on horseracing in New Mexico. This year we have finally been able to get back to being close to normal.
• Sunland Park ran their 2022 race meet after being closed since March of 2020, and at one point, during the 2022 meet, the purses had to be raised 25%! Sunland Park’s stakes schedule for New Mexico Breds was incredible with 21 stakes races worth a minimum of $100,000 each and two races were worth $250,000 each! We contributed $1,330,000!
• SunRay Park was cancelled in 2020 but was able to run their meet both in 2021 and 2022. ThepurseshadtoberaisedatSunRay Parkthisyearaswell. In18days,theyran7 New Mexico Bred stakes with 6 being $100,000 guaranteed and the Breeders’ Futurity being $120,000 added. We contributed $430,000!
• As of the writing of this letter, Ruidoso Downs is getting ready to raise their purses starting with the second condition book.
There are 16 New Mexico Bred stakes races with most of them running during Zia Festival. We are contributing $370,000 plus! We hope to be able to raise this amount.
• The Downs At Albuquerque will have ten New Mexico Bred stakes races totaling $1.2 million plus. In 2022, we will be contributing $610,000!
• Zia Park also offers 17 stakes races for New Mexico Breds and 14 of those are a minimum of $125,000! We will be contributing $930,000 in 2022!
So, the money is coming back, and it is the perfect time to have New Mexico Breds!
The yearling sales are coming up in Ruidoso and there will be some great opportunities to acquire horses that can run in our great stakes races. There will be a lot of Quarter Horse
yearlings that have made the first two payments
for the million-dollar New Mexico State Fair QH Futuritytoberunin2023.So,makeplanstocome totheNewMexicoBredsaleonAugust19thand 20th and the Select sale on Labor Day weekend.
Please mark your calendars to attend the Zia Festival at Ruidoso Downs on August 6th & 7th! It will be a great weekend to showcase our New Mexico Breds. We will start everything off with our Town Hall Meeting at the Horse Sale Pavilion at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. This will be a good time to discuss important topics with our Trustees. That evening there will be a dinner in the Turf Club after the races with the award ceremony for our 2021 champions. An invitation with all the details will be sent out to our members along with nominators, qualifiers, and our legislators. We will also have a booth set up at the grandstand, so be sure to stop by to say hello. Good luck to all the participants in the Zia Festival Stakes!
Hope to see you at the races! Sincerely,
Mary M. Barber
