                FROM THE PRESIDENT
   Dear Members,
As of this writing, we’ve just concluded the meet at SunRay Park and are well on our way into the heart of the Ruidoso meeting. In fact, Ruidoso Downs has announced that the purses will be raised by 20% for the 2nd Condition Book.
Our Executive Director, Mary Barber, shared some fascinating statistics for the SunRay meet. In eighteen days of racing, consisting of 182 races, 102 of those races were won by New Mexico Breds. This is a 56% win rate for NM Breds! Approximately $200,000.00 was sent
by the NMHBA towards the 20% bonus program for New Mexico breds who ran 1st, 2nd or 3rd in open overnight races. Congratulations to all!
HISA is taking effect on July 1st. The new rules contained in HISA pertain to thoroughbreds only. “Covered persons”,
is the term used in the HISA language to include basically everyone and anyone who is involved with thoroughbred racing. This includes owners, trainers, grooms, jockeys, veterinarians, and other licensed personnel. If a thoroughbred’s connections are not registered with HISA, it is likely that the horse will not be allowed to run. Please get registered – the process is quick and easy.
Here is the link if you need it: https://www.hisaus.org/registration.
Foaling and breeding are done and just when you thought you could take a breath, it’s time to prep the yearlings for sale. Let’s all hope for a successful sale.
On the Thursday night before the
NM bred sale starts, the NMHBA will
be putting on a barbeque as a way of saying thanks to all of you. Details will be announced prior to the event. Hope to see as many of you as possible.
In closing, let us all send good thoughts to Susan Hunter of Hunter Creek Farms. As you probably heard, Susan lost a huge number of horses, primarily yearlings, due to a mysterious illness that struck her facility. Condolences to Susan, her staff, and her clients.
Best regards,
Tom Goncharoff NMHBA President
