Sent to post as the 5-2 favorite in a full field of 10 New Mexico-bred 2-year-old quarter horses, Cartel Racer broke his maiden with a wire-to-wire victory in the April 3, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.
Cartel Racer broke sharply from his rail post and led all the way, as the gray son of Big Daddy Cartel defeated 21-1 longshot JM Vidi by a head in :15.414 while aided by a reported 11-mph tail wind.
Sergio Becerra Jr. rode Cartel Racer for owners Empire Racing and Pavon Racing LLC and trainer Eric Valenzuela.
Cartel Racer made his lifetime debut with a third-place finish, a head behind winner JP D Bandida Regard, in a New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trial on March 12.
The colt was bred by Mike and Yealonda Logan and he was purchased as a yearling by his owners for $21,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
Cartel Racer’s sire, the winning Corona Cartel stallion Big Daddy Cartel, has sired
the earners of more than $13.2 million from seven crops, including multiple graded stakes winners Bigg Daddy, Cat Daddys Lil Girl, and Mamacita Cartel. A finalist in the 2011 All American (G1) and Rainbow (G1) futurities, the stallion is owned by and stands for a $5,500 fee at Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.
Cartel Racer is out of Miss Ravens Wood, a winning 9-year-old daughter of the Dash Ta Fame stallion Woodbridge.
His second dam, the Heza Fast Man mare Three Dee Dreams, won the 2000 Huntington Beach Handicap at Los Alamitos. Three Dee Dreams produced Answer The Dream, a graded stakes winning half-sister to Miss Ravens Wood who foaled Grade 3 winner Dreams Divine and stakes winners Splendid Cause and Empty Arms.
Cartel Racer (Big Daddy Cartel-Miss Ravens Wood) earned the $23,500 winner’s share of a $50,000 purse. The colt has earned $24,390 from two outs.
Runner-up JM Vidi (JM Specialwynn-JM First Madam Moon) banked $9,000 for his owner, Ventura M Ranch LLC. The sorrel daughter of the Walk Thru Fire stallion
JM Specialwynn has earned $9,455 from two starts.
KJ Daddys Money (Big Daddy Cartel-KJ Kiss Me Goodbye) finished third, one length behind Cartel Racer.
KJ Daddys Money is a homebred daughter of Big Daddy Cartel racing for John Lee, Kathy Lee, and I. Ruben Mares. The bay filly earned the $5,500 third-place share of the New Mexican Spring Fling purse to bring her bankroll to $7,280 from two races.
JP D Bandida Regard (Chicks Regard-D Bandida), Flecha Gris (Osbaldo-VN Dos
Por Tres), J Y Jaaziel (Big Daddy Cartel- Thats Jess Hot), BV Taggin The Moon (First Moonflash-Hashtaggin), Flashy Babe (Chicks Regard-Riverside Babe), Jess Emotions (Jess
A Chicks-The Blues Girl), and Im The Cartel Queen (Big Daddy Cartel-Queenofreigndeers) completed the order of finish.
