2017 Record: 9-7(3)-2(1)-0, $1,430,411, Los Alamitos Two Million F.-G1, Golden State Million F.-G1, Gov. Cup F.-RG2, 2nd Ed Burke Million F.-G1
Los Alamitos fans know Jaime Gomez as one of the track’s top trainers. But he also does very well with his homebreds, and he got a 2-time Champion in 2017 with J Fire Up.
Gomez breeds horses at his Murrieta, California ranch, where Ernesto Solis has worked for him for 25 years. Gomez frequently gives Solis an interest in some of the homebreds, and Solis picked out This Boogie Fires, the dam of J Fire Up.
To the cover of Kiddy Up, This Boogie Fires produced J Fire Up. Gomez offered the filly at the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, buying her back for $25,000. Dan Darling of Lamont, Oklahoma, convinced Gomez to sell him a half-interest, with Gomez and Solis each keeping 25%.
“I liked the way she was built,” said Darling, who also campaigned 2-time Champion Hold Air Hostage in 2017. “I just loved the way she moved.”
Gomez trains J Fire Up for the partnership, and in her first three starts, she won once and finished second twice. She wouldn’t lose again the rest of the year while succeeding in Los Alamitos’ biggest futurities.
Because Gomez bred the filly in California, she could run in the Governor’s Cup Futurity- RG2. She scored in her trial and the final by 3/4-length each time.
J Fire Up qualified the fastest for the Golden State Million Futurity-G1. In the Nov. 5 finals, she had to battle 16-1 Matilda Czech, who never gave up. J Fire Up showed her class, however, and eked out a nose victory.
“When our filly saw the other filly, she just kept on trying,” said Gomez.
In the trials for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1, J Fire Up qualified the second fastest, behind the colt Call Me Cole. In the Dec. 17 finals, she went favored over Call Me Cole, bulleted out of the starting gate, and never looked back. She finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Moonie Blues, with Call Me Cole third.
“J Fire Up has never made a mistake,” said Gomez. “She just goes out there and runs her race every time.”
