EAGLE JAZZ si 95, $902,849
Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding
Breeder/Owner: Juan A. Medina
Trainers: James B. Padgett, R.L. Robinson & Judd Kearl
Jockeys: Agustin Silva & Rodrigo Vallejo
2017 Record: 8-7(2)-1(1)-0, $902,849, Rainbow F.-G1, Ruidoso F.-G1, 2nd Remington Park Okla. Bred F.-RG2
Juan Medina of Zapata, Texas, may have officially registered Eagle Jazz as the name for his homebred son of One Dashing Eagle out of Baja Jazz, but he affectionately calls the gelding The Monster.
“He’s like a body-builder,” said Medina. “You wouldn’t even think he would run so fast at the start because of how big he is. But he’s quick.”
Eagle Jazz was so quick during 2017 that in eight starts he won seven and lost his only race by a head, finishing second. He also might have captured the All American Triple Crown except that he dominated his All American Futurity-G1 trial so completely that didn’t qualify.
Medina purchased Baja Jazz for $13,000
at the 2007 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. She earned $156,763 and became a grade 1 winner for him.
“She was just one of those who caught my eye,” Medina said. “She had real good conformation. I liked her bloodlines, too.”
Oklahoma-bred Eagle Jazz began his racing career at Remington Park. He broke his maiden in his debut, added a victory in his trial for the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity-G2, and then had his only loss in the finals, just missing to La Vencedora.
At Ruidoso Downs, Eagle Jazz aced his trial for the Ruidoso Futurity, easily qualifying the fastest of both days of trials. In the final, he stumbled at the start and still dead-heated for first with Uptown Dynasty.
Eagle Jazz returned for the second leg of
the All American Triple Crown, the Ruidoso Futurity-G1. He again qualified the fastest, winning his trial by 3 1/4-lengths, and he scored in the final by 3/4-length.
Medina thus had Eagle Jazz positioned
to win the All American Triple Crown. The gelding went off at 1-2 in his All American trial, and despite another stumble at the start, he scored by an incredible 4 1/2-lengths. Unfortunately, his time, :21.957 for 440 yards, was not fast enough to qualify for the final.
Nevertheless, Eagle Jazz earned $902,849 at two, and his record earned him the title of Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding.
“He’s been a real good horse,” said Medina.
