Breeder: Luis Miguel Albores Gleason Owner: Darling Farms
Trainer: James B. Padgett & Judd Kearl Jockeys: Omar Reyes, Ricky Ramirez & Rodrigo Vallejo
2017 Record: 8-6(3)-1-1, $1,200,939, All American D.-G1, Rainbow D.-G1, Heritage Place D.-G2
Dan and Tiara Darling of Lamont, Oklahoma, who race in the name of Darling Farms, had an excellent 2017. Darling Farms was named Champion Owner, and the Darlings own 2-time Champion Hold Air Hostage and have a half-interest in 2-time Champion J Fire Up.
Dan Darling picked Hold Air Hostage out of the 2015 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale for $12,700. Luis Miguel Albores Gleason bred the son of Apollitical Jess out of Fols Zookie Cookie in Oklahoma.
“I liked his size and his breeding,” said Darling.
At the end of Hold Air Hostage’s 2-year-old season in 2016, he finished eighth in the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Futurity-RG3.
“He didn’t run and had his head up,” said Dan Darling. “Sure enough, he had chips in both knees. We got that fixed. I took him back out to the farm and turned him out.”
Hold Air Hostage returned better than ever. At Remington Park, he won an allowance race and qualified for the Heritage Place Derby-G2 with a second in his trial.
In the finals, Hold Air Hostage flew home by 1 3/4-lengths over favored Apollitical Scout. Ricky Ramirez rode Hold Air Hostage because Rodrigo Vallejo piloted 4th-place Duponte, winner of the previous year’s Heritage Place Futurity-G1. Vallejo returned to Hold Air Hostage for the rest of the season.
At Ruidoso Downs, Hold Air Hostage went four for four. He qualified the fastest for the Rainbow Derby-G1 and took the finals by 1 3/4-lengths.
Then came the rich All American Derby-G1. Now trained by Jimmy Padgett, Hold Air Hostage again qualified the fastest. Padgett had a phenomenal All American weekend, saddling Hold Air Hostage for his easy 2 1/4-length score, as well as All American Futurity-G1 winner Fly Baby Fly, All American Gold Cup-G1 winner Jessies First Down, and All American Juvenile winner Jesse Lane.
“It was pretty exciting,” Dan Darling said. “He loves to run. There were a lot of good horses in the race. I went by to see him the morning after the race, and he was full of energy and acted like he could run that day.”
