That Jess Good Reason received the Champion Aged Mare title is fitting because her owners, the late John and Cina Sperry, were stalwarts of the Quarter Horse racing industry, especially at Los Alamitos.
“I’ve loved horses all my life,” John Sperry once said. “When I was younger, I would always try to sneak in to Los Alamitos.”
Later on, he had no reason to sneak in, as
he and his wife were more often than not in
the winner’s circle. Even after Cina died, John Sperry raced horses in both their names. He was able to experience much of Jess Good Reason’s championship season in 2017 before he passed away at age 81 on Dec. 7.
Sperry bought Jess Good Reason at the side of her dam, Jess Call Me Tieing, with the help of multiple Champion trainer Paul Jones, who conditions Jess Good Reason. Preston and Karen Cloud bred Jess Good Reason in Oklahoma.
Jess Good Reason has spent her entire career at Los Alamitos, becoming a stakes winner at two in 2015 and adding to those laurels the following year. In her initial start of 2017, the Jan. 8 Charger Bar Handicap-G1, Jess Good Reason flew out of the gate perfectly to win by 1/2-length under jockey Oscar Peinado.
A hematoma on her hip that became infected compromised the middle of her season.
“We just had some problems with it,” said Jones. “It made her sick.”
However, Jones and his crew took good care of Jess Good Reason, who finished second by just a nose in the Sept. 24 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1 and then qualified for the Champion of Champions-G1 in the Nov. 19 Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Invitational. Ridden by Peinado in the first division of the
Z. Wayne Griffin, Jess Good Reason not only won the race, she posted the fastest time of both divisions, getting the 400 yards in :19.686.
Sperry died before Jess Good Reason competed in the Champion of Champions. She finished a good fourth and has since been purchased by Paragon Farms, headed by Tom Lipar of Conroe, Texas.
