CAPTAIN CAPI
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Dee Keener edged closer to over- taking the legendary Paint trainer Lewis Wartchow’s record in the $183,950 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 this year when he saddled Lloyd Garrison’s Captain Capi to win the race. Keener has now won the stakes four times, only one behind Wartchow.
Wartchow died in 2003, and Keener won his first edition of the race
the following year with
Linda Lajolla. He repeated
with Fast Attitude in 2009 and Miss Movin On in 2014.
When the gate opened
in this years event, Captain Capi flew to the lead from the 7-post. He increased
his advantage throughout the 300 yards to score by 1 1/4-lengths in a wire-to-wire performance. Captain Capi stopped the timer in :15.334 for a 93 speed index.

Martha Wells and Matthew Fales hit the Trifecta in the March 29 El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3 at Los Alamitos. Tell Cartel
finished first, followed by Old School Icon and Fire By Night, all three owned and bred by Wells and trained by Fales.
Flokie, who went off as the 6-5 favorite, broke outwardly and took the lead, with Tell Cartel, ridden by Ruben Lozano, in second. Tell Cartel came on strongly in the last part of the 400-yard race, drawing
off to win by 1 3/4-lengths in
:19.473, which was good for a
101 speed index.
“He floated over that track tonight,” said Fales. “It’s amazing that I have a superstar on my hands. I want to embrace every moment of it.”
Fales also complimented Lozano’s ride. “With a horse like this, even if he’s beat in the first 100 or 200 yards, he
“I had three really nice horses in there (Captain Capi, WF Turnpike Candy, and JS Shezaquickchick),” Keener said. “I am happy for Lloyd. I have had horses quite a while for Lloyd. He is a good owner.”
Captain Capi qualified the second fastest in winning his March 6 trial in his racing debut. James Flores piloted him in the trial, but when
Flores opted to ride odds-on favorite WF Turnpike Candy, Juan Pulido took over on Captain Capi.
Garrison bred Captain Capi out of winning Paint mare Rosy Dial. She has pro- duced six starters, five of them winners. Captain Capi is Rosy Dial’s first stakes winner and earner of $74,876.
Dunn Ranch’s homebred Baileys N Corona APHA (Coronado Cartel QH-Baileys N Sunsets) finished second.
stays patient and rides the horse with a lot of confidence.”
The $89,586 winner’s share of the
purse boosted his total lifetime earnings to $252,902 and his race record is 13-6(2)-3(1)- 1(1). Tell Cartel won this year’s Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, also with Lozano aboard. In 2019, the colt ran second in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity-G2 and third in the Pat Hyland Memorial Handicap.
Wells bred Tell Cartel out of Chicks Tell, who raced
for Wells and won the 2002 Huntington Beach Handicap. Chicks Tell is also the dam
of Fire By Night third in this race. The mare has produced 24 winners in 31 starters, including stakes winners Forrest Fire and My Favorite Cartel and four other stakes- placed runners.
Wells bred and races second-place Old School Icon
Mario Delgado rode the filly for trainer Monty Arrossa. Baileys N Corona debuted in her trial, running second.
Keener and Flores collaborated on third- place WF Turnpike Candy APHA (Painted Turnpike-SW Eye Candy), owned by Painted Faith Racing. WF Turnpike Candy, in his racing debut, was the fastest qualifier for the futurity.
Completing the field were JS Shezaquickchick APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Cartel
Chicken), Tales U Lose APHA (Wagon Tales QH-Elaina Go Go), Wired Two Twenty
APHA (CRM Livewire-Bentley James), MH Famous Moonshine APHA (Readi To Be Famous-Gorgeous Judy), Captain Blood ApHC (Apollitical Blood QH-Eyesa Knockout), and Loaded On Crown APHA (Cocked An Loaded- Smashed On Crown). This Wire Is Hot APHA was scratched.
(Texas Icon-Cozie Fire) and third-place Fire
By Night (Walk Thru Fire-Chicks Tell), both trained by Fales. Last year, Old School Icon ran second in the Corona Chick Handicap and The Plan Handicap and third in the Desert Classic Futurity. Fire By Night is still a maiden, but has run second twice and third four times previously.
Diamond Rock (Parsons Rock-Might She Go) finished fourth. Sass Go Blue (Seperate Interest-Sass Me Blue) finished fifth, but was disqualified to eighth for interference. Mister Tornado (Sports Cartel-Spanish Sola Mark), You Can Run (Favorite Cartel-You Can Fly), and Corona Required (Corona Cartel-No Tools Required) finished sixth, seventh, and eighth and were moved up to fifth, sixth, and seventh upon the disqualification.
