Homebreds trained by Don Reid were the key to the inaugural Ontario Sires Stakes Derby at Ajax Downs. The conditioner sad-
dled the first three horses across the wire, all homebreds, with Wranglin Gump getting the victory over Kissmystarrydash and Red Kelly.
Prior to the Aug. 7 Ontario Sires Derby final, the three horses had started for Reid a combined 12 times, with nine victories. Jockey Brian Bell had ridden each
horse in all 12 races, and he
opted for fastest-qualifier and
favored Kissmystarrydash.
Helen Vanek took over on Wranglin Gump, the second-fastest qualifier. Kissmystarrydash drew post five, just inside of Wranglin Gump, and got the initial jump out of the gate. But Wranglin Gump put on a burst of speed in the late stages of the 330 yards to
overtake Kissmystarrydash right at the wire and win by a neck in :16.930.
Owned and bred by Lisa Kalvoda,
Wranglin Gump started once at 2, finishing eighth. This year he has been nearly perfect, winning three of his four starts and running second in the other by just a neck, all at Ajax. The gelding is by the Mr Eye Opener stallion Eye Dash and out of winner Wranglin Reba. He
is the mare’s second foal, fol- lowing winner Wranglin Jag.
Reid trains Kissmystarrydash (Star Fire Dash-Strawfly Fortune) for owner-breeder Donald Ito. Unraced at 2, the gelding broke his maiden in June and won his Ontario Sires Derby trial. In between those two races, he finished third in an allowance.
Whispering Winz Racing owns and bred Red Kelly (Eye Dash-Royal Gate), who had Jeff
MacLaren aboard in the final. The gelding made six starts last year at 2 without a victory prior to Reid taking over his training in 2012. Since then, Red Kelly had won four consecutive races, includ- ing his trial for the Ontario Sires Derby.
Reid’s sweep of the first three spots comes on the heels of becoming only the 33rd trainer to win 1,000 Quarter Horse races, a feat he accomplished on July 15.
Rounding out the field were Pegasos One Underpar (Down Home Dash-Pegasos Easy Seven), Fly Fast For Kayley (Fastazyoufly- Steppin Kayley), Midnight Justice (Jack In The Pulpit-Reckless Wish), Star Fire Seis (Star Fire Dash-Milagro Seis), Hurricane Alexandra (Sugarman Perry-Hurricane Caleigh), Black Chart (Black Moons Arising-Shake The Chart), and Mr Cougarlicious (Black Moons Arising-Okey Dokey Lark).

bank of america evergreen championship challenge
FasT FIFTy
by John Moorehouse
In a racing career that has spanned four years and 16 total outs, Fast Fifty has yet to race outside of the Canadian province of Alberta. Hey—or perhaps that should be, “eh”—why
mess with a good thing? The 5-year-old gelding added another accomplishment to an already solid race record on Aug. 12, winning the Bank of America Evergreen Championship Challenge at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie.
Fast Fifty, who is owned by Herds Racing, logged
his ninth win in 16 starts and his fourth stakes win. He’s hit the board 13 times while running at Evergreen Park, Northlands Park and Lethbridge. Fast Fifty’s latest win was especially significant. It also quali- fied the gelding for the
Bank of America Challenge Championships to be held at Prairie Meadows in October.

Fast Fifty punched his ticket for that lucrative event with a runaway victory in the Evergreen Championship Challenge, which also marked his first win in 2012. Jockey
Tyler Walker brought the gelding out of the six gate at the front of the pack, and he burst out to a half-length lead. Fast Fifty continued to pour on more steam over the remainder of the 440 yards, widening the gap with every stride
to reach the wire enjoying a 1 3/4-length margin of victory. Donalda Cochrane trains
Fast Fifty and also bred the gelding, who finished his trip in :21.650 to register a scorch- ing 105 speed index.
Fast Fifty’s latest win produced a $16,933 payday for his owners, and pushed the gelding’s total earnings to $95,724. Fast Fifty remains the only starter yet produced by his dam, Bubbles La Jolla,
a 2002 Streakin La Jolla mare who was a Grade 2 finalist during her racing career.
Gully Enterprises’ Struttin High (Struttin To Beduino-Regally Rare) finished sec-
ond. Alvin Turner is the trainer and Cody McDaniel did the riding.
Parsons Rock (First Down Dash-Mini Rock), which is owned by the Parsons Family Partnership, hit the board in third. The Dean Frey trainee had Juan Garcia in the irons.
The remaining order of finish in the Evergreen Championship Challenge was Howdoyalikemesofar (Oak Tree Special-Sheza Soverign Dash), last year’s Bank Of America Evergreen Championship Challenge winner Bond Is Back (A Regal Choice-Lady Lucchese), Current Sea (Separatist-Shirleys Strawfly), Birdzilla Amour (Birdzilla TB-Secret Amour) and Co Lani Jet (Easy Dodad-Co Co Lani).
