Jess Fire Chick, the second-fastest qualifier and 5-2 favorite, kept her record perfect with a half-length victory in the July 29, 400-yard Zia Quarter Horse Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred juveniles at Ruidoso Downs.
Ridden by Agustin Silva for the first time in a race and sprinting against a reported 16-mph head wind, Jess Fire Chick stopped the timer in :20.148. Wes Giles saddled the sorrel daughter of Jess A Chicks for owners Mike Abraham of Bosque, New Mexico, and Paul Blanchard of Albuquerque.
Jess Fire Chick was coming off of a
head victory in one of 11 trials on a muddy and sealed track on July 14. The filly was bred by Abraham, a longtime breeder of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses who last year ranked ninth among all Quarter Horse breeders in money earned at $1,143,078.
Jess Fire Chick’s sire, Jess A Chicks, is an 11-year-old son of the Chicks Beduino stallion Chicks A Blazin and 2004 All American Futurity (G1) finalist Jess Satin. Racing in New Mexico from 2009-10, Jess A Chicks banked $175,537 from eight starts, and his four wins included the ’09 Zia Futurity (RG1). He also ran third in Here Kittykittykitty’s 2010 Zia Derby (RG2).
Jess A Chicks has sired the earners of more than $1.8 million from five crops, topped by graded stakes winners Chickaloni, Hot Indy Chick, and Yudes Jess Dashin. The stallion
is owned by the partnership of Mooring, McClintic, and Abraham, and he stands for a $2,500 fee at W.L. and Dee Mooring’s Double LL Farm at Bosque.
Jess Fire Chick’s dam, Required Fire, is a homebred 8-year-old daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Walk Thru Fire. Campaigned at Ruidoso Downs and California from 2012-13, Required Fire won four of eight starts, including the 2013 Go Josie Go Overnight Handicap at Los Alamitos, and she banked $71,235.
Jess Fire Chick is a half sister to Flash Moonfire, the runner-up to Daddys Blushing in last year’s Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs. The filly’s second dam, the Jody O Toole mare No Tools Required, won three graded stakes in Texas from 2001-02, including the 2001 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) at Sam Houston Race Park.
No Tools Required produced two stakes win- ners, including One Hot Mecanic, a half brother to Required Fire who won the 2010 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park. Jess Fire Chick traces back to
her third dam, Special Jelly Roll, a daughter of the Easy Jet stallion Jelly Jet who won the ’90 Heritage Place Derby (RG1) at Remington Park.
Jess Fire Chick has won all four of her outs, including the 350-yard, $346,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs on June 16. The $172,065 winner’s share of the $409,680 purse increased her earnings to $322,040.
“She has a huge heart,” said Giles of Jess Fire Chick. “Not many horses give as much as her.
“I thought going into her first start that she had a good chance to win,” the trainer added. “She won, and I keep on waiting for her to get tired, and she doesn’t.”
Midnite Blu finished second and was followed by fastest qualifier Cd Mamas Boy, Regard The Sevens, Sister Sophia, Zee James, Kunde, No Mires A La Luna, June Bug Daddy, and Fireball Flash.
Midnite Blu was coming off of a second- place finish to Cd Mamas Boy in the fifth of 11 Zia Futurity trials. A brown son of champion First Moonflash owned by Too For Two and a $45,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the gelding ran third, three-quarters of a length behind winner Zee James, in the April 7, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park. Midnite Blu has won one of four starts, and the $73,742 runner-up share of the Zia Futurity purse pushed his bankroll to $123,487.
Cd Mamas Boy brought in a two-race win streak that included a half-length win in the fifth of 11 Zia Futurity trials. The sorrel First Moonflash gelding has won two of four starts and has earned $50,318 for his owner, Daniel Ramirez.
