MOUNTAIN TOP QH FUTURITY (RG3)
Jess Fire Chick, the second-fastest qualifier, led at every call en route to a head victory in the June 16, 350-yard Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity (RG3) for New Mexico-bred two-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.
Trained by Wes Giles for owners Mike Abraham and Paul Blanchard, Jess Fire Chick broke on top from the six-hole. She had a head at the first call and held that margin to the wire.
Jess Fire Chick stopped the timer in :17.841 while racing against a reported 13-mph head wind on a track officially labeled “good.”
Regular rider Adrian Ramos rode the homebred two-year-old sorrel daughter of Jess A Chicks.
Jess Fire Chick made her debut with a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length win in the last
of 10 Mountain Top Futurity trials on June 1. In the trials, Jess Fire Chick was out of the nine-hole on the lead, had 1/2-length at the first call and a full length at the top of the stretch.
She showed speed all the way and fin- ished her trial event with daylight over the nearest competitor.
The filly’s sire, Jess A Chicks, is an 11-year-old son of the Chicks Beduino stal- lion Chicks A Blazin and the graded stakes placed Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Satin.
Racing in New Mexico from 2009-10, Jess A Chicks earned $175,537 from eight
starts, and his four wins included the ’09 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.
Jess A Chicks has sired the money earners of more than $1.6 million from just five crops to race, including additional graded stakes winners Chickaloni, Hot Indy Chick, and Yudes Jess Dashin.
Jess A Chicks is owned by the partner- ship of Mooring, McClintic, and Abraham.
The stallion stands for a $2,500 fee at W.L. and Dee Mooring’s Double LL Farm at Bosque, New Mexico.
Jess Fire Chick is out of Required Fire, a homebred eight-year-old daughter of Walk Thru Fire who won the 2013 Go Josie Go Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Required Fire is a half-sister to One Hot Mecanic, the winner of the 2010 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.
The filly’s second dam, the Jody O Toole mare No Tools Required, won three graded stakes in Texas from 2001-02, including the 2001 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) at Sam Houston Race Park.
With this stakes victory in the Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity, Jess Fire Chick has now won both of her starts, and the $145,175 winner’s share of the Mountain Top Futurity purse pushed the filly’s bank- roll to $147,575.
”She breaks hard every time,” said Blanchard of Jess Fire Chick.
“She runs hard and runs flat the whole
way, the co-owner continued. “She is 100 percent runner.”
Regard The Sevens finished in second place and was followed by No Mires A La Luna, Cristobell Fame, Rallydownthealley, Mafiosa, Whooz Your Daddy, fastest quali- fier Another Chick Flick, Cartel Mister, and Cat Daddys Lil Girl.
Regard The Sevens races for Raider 5 Racing LLC, which purchased the brown son of Chicks Regard as a yearling for $12,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Regard The Sevens has won one of two starts, and the $62,218 runner-up share of the Mountain Top Futurity purse increased the gelding’s earnings to $64,618.
No Mires A La Luna is a homebred son of Champion First Moonflash campaigned by Byron Woodard and David Valdez. Raced in Texas and New Mexico, the bay gelding has banked $37,146 from four outs.
