Page 8 - New Mexico Horse Breeder, Fall
P. 8
FROM THE PRESIDENT
This month I didn’t have to look far to find plenty of good news for breeders in New Mexico. The breed sale was tremendous, the purses are up at The Downs At Albuquerque and the purses are up even more at Zia Park. The probability that this run of good news will continue right
on through the breeding season is highly likely. The average price for thoroughbred yearlings
was up a whopping 51% and the average price for Quarter Horse yearlings was up an equally impressive 49%. While the yearling prices are usually reflective of the economy, I’ve heard many praises of the New Mexico breed program and will attribute some of this good news to our program. Lowell Neumayer, the general manager of Ruidoso Horse Sales Company called the New Mexico breed sale one of the best state-bred sales in the country. Definitely all of this good news is something that we can build from.
Also at the breed sale, NMHBA sold donated seasons to three thoroughbred stallions and
to three Quarter Horse stallions. The three Thoroughbred stallions are Attila’s Storm (donated by R. D. Hubbard), Abstraction (donated by Doubletree Farm, Susie Prather)
and Marking (donated by A & A Ranch, Fred Alexander and partners). The three Quarter Horse stallions are First Moonflash (donated by Mike Abraham, Pierre and Leslie Amestoy and Maria Gonzalez), Chicks Regard (donated by Killer Humberto Gaxiola Lopez) and Jess A Chicks
(donated by W.L. Mooring, John McClintic & Mike Abraham). These donations were generous and very much appreciated. The board of trustees will ensure that the funds received are spent wisely to promote the breed program.
In other news, Jeff True from Ruidoso Downs invited legislators to Ruidoso for “Legislative Day at the Races” in early August. The event was well attended and the group enjoyed a day of races and the wine and chile festival. Jeff also coordinated a presentation and panel discussion for the legislators to discuss the racing industry and the possibility of sports wagering and advanced deposit wagering (ADW). This meeting was a good introduction and precursor to the discussions that will continue through the next legislative session involving sports wagering and how it fits in the racing industry. If I can, I would like to ask everyone to keep informed on the progress of sports wagering and ADW because we will need your support during the legislative process.
Just as an update on the possibility for
the granting of the sixth racing license, the applications have been submitted and the commission has begun the process of evaluating these applications. The locations proposed are in Clovis, Lordsburg and Tucumcari. Presentations to the commission will occur in late September and site visits will occur in early October. Again, stay tuned on this one.
We are continuing to work on the New Mexico Thoroughbred Triple Crown, but our original plans have been delayed. We are still hoping to have something with agreement from all in the near future.
Enjoy the beautiful New Mexico fall and let us know if you have questions, concerns, great ideas or just comments.
Sincerely,
Ralph W. Vincent
