Mexico Futurity Consolation
BYE BYE MOM
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The participants in this race were the ones who did not qualify to the Mexico Futurity. The best times were established in the trials on April 21, but the difference between the 11th and 20th times was only 0.11 hundredths of
a second, so the chances seemed equal for all. Sea Speednchico topped the list with :13.232, followed by Lord Invasor with :13.307, and so on to Solo Cartel, who scored :13.349 at the bottom of the qualifiers.
Given the quality and athleticism of the participants as well as the allocated prize of $295,040 pesos (approximately $15,288 US dollars), the race seemed like it should be
a stakes event, as the ten runners met with their respective teams to face their commit- ment at 250 yards.
The break was only tarnished by Lord Invasor’s (#5) contact with Miss Cheetah Merry (#6), as he drifted outward. The group
advanced compactly, how-
ever, keeping a fast pace with
minimal difference between
the leaders, commanded by
the grey colt La Rapid King
Judea. In the final stages,
Bye Bye Mom (#10) closed
strongly under the command
of Alejandro Gómez Díaz. It
was an anxious wait to decide
the order of finish of the four
leaders, but the declared win-
ner was Bye Bye Mom with a
time of :13.29 (SI 87). “They
were noses of a difference
between first and fourth place,” was the talk of many fans, which was confirmed later with the chart of the race.
Orphaned at an early age, the gelding Bye Bye Mom was bred by veterinarian Rachuán
Suárez Kuri, owner of the stallion Fearless Fritz and
the mare Warm Secret, a daughter of Walk Thru Fire. Consigned to the Yearling Select Auction Sale, he was purchased for $300,000 pesos (approximately $16,805 US dollars) by Cuadra El Renacimiento. The gelding came to the Mexico Futurity Consolation after finishing second in his trial behind the qualifier Divas First Spartan, when he clocked :13.307,
which was very similar to his final time of :13.29. Bye Bye Mom was saddled by trainer Israel Martínez Paz.
For this, his first victory, he added to his account $177,024 pesos (approximately $9,173
