Mexico Futurity
ONE RAINBOW
by Luis Prieto Zamudio.
This is the first test of the season for Quarter Horses born in Mexico that went through the Yearling Select Auction at the Hipodromo de las Américas on Sept. 5-6, 2017. Of the 452 eligible colts and fillies, 212 were nominated to the Mexico Futurity qualifying races held on April 21-22, where only 206 competed at a short 250 yards.
There were twelve trials each day to get the finalists, as well as those who would dispute the Mexico Futurity Consolation. AS Macho stood out as the fastest qualifier with :13.094, obtained in the second race on April 22, while Proud Freeda registered :13.153 in the sixth race on April 21. They were the two best times of each day. One Rainbow, the eventual winner of the race, came from the same heat as AS Macho, where she closed in second place to that horse with :13.188, clenching the third fastest qualifying time.
As expected, AS Macho was the favorite in the odds, a prediction that was not realized as the filly One Rainbow was responsible for the setback.
SE Royal Mountain (#7) and Divas First Spartan (#9) stumbled at the break, while One Rainbow (#5) and AS Macho (#8) had the opportunity to push themselves with strength. It was a battle, where the filly remained at the front under the excellent command of Moisés Molina, crossing the finish line first by a nose. It was a photo finish, but the uncertainty was cleared when the announcer said, “Result of the photograph, first place number 5 One Rainbow...” Her team and followers erupted in joy, in contrast to the disappointment of the defeated AS Macho. It was a certainly a contest between these two sprinters, given that third placed Princes Henrry was 2 3/4-lengths behind AS Macho.
For the stakes victory, One Rainbow cov- ered the race in a remarkable :12.93 (SI 102),
a new stakes record for the Mexico Futurity. Jockey Molina, her rider in both races, said that in addition to her good preparation and ability to run, the filly ran a perfect race. “The trials were her first race and she did not leave on time, but in the finals, she stood very well in the gates and started with a lot of strength. One Rainbow left without making mistakes along the way. AS Macho was always close and I thought it could be a draw or he would win in the last stride,” said the native rider from Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco State. “I thank the trainer José Ravel Baltazar for the confidence to work with the filly before her debut and for riding in
this successful futurity,” said “Moy,” as the professional jockey is known.
The presentation was attended by the distinguished presence of Celina Molina, who with her simplicity and beauty captivated the audi- ence, whom she attended with a smile.
Bred in Chihuahua at
the 21 Partnership, One
Rainbow, the daughter
of Rabbits Rainbow out of Woodys Wild One, reached only $130,000 pesos (approx. $7,282 US dollars) at the auction ring and was repurchased and later sold in a private deal to Cuadra San Pedro PZH, for which she is cur- rently running.
The purse for the Mexico Futurity was $3,844,000 pesos (approx. $199,182 US dollars), of which $2,966,700 pesos (approx. $153,723 US dollars) was allocated to reward the Futurity finalists according to their position at the line. One Rainbow added $1,246,014 pesos (approx. $64,564 US dollars) to her account for her victory.
AS Macho (California Cartel-Check This Star Out), who improved his qualifying time
up to :12.94 (SI 101), finished second. His rider, José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, said, “The horse was bothered by a small puddle that was in his way, which could be the cause
of the minimum difference in his arrival, but anyway,
he ran very well. Another stride, and we could have taken the race.” Ambrosio remains a leading rider in the statistics of his division at
the Hipódromo de las Américas. AS Macho is owned by Cuadra Falcón, his on-site condi- tioner is Ismael Parra, but Rafael Alejandro Contreras officially trains him. The colt was bred by Arturo Siller.
The grey filly Princes Henrry (Pepper Perry-Darling Henry) took third place for owner Rancho González under José Manuel Cisneros. She is trained by José Ravel Baltazar and was bred by Rancho Hacienda Santiago.
The remaining order of finish was com- pleted in the following order: Proud Freeda (Fearless Fritz–Proud Corrina), One Corona Sweet (Southern Corona–One Sweet Check), Divas First Spartan (Divas First Down–La Candy Woman), SE Royal Mountain (Logans
