Indiana Grand Classic
A TACKY CHICK
by Michael Compton
ATacky Chick scored her second stakes win in the $46,785 Indiana Grand Classic on June 22. Ridden by Jesus Salazar, A Tacky Chick, who also won the race in 2017, broke alertly and chased early leader Keen Liaison from second. A Tacky Chick closed gamely on the pacesetter through the lane and got up in time to score by a neck over that rival, stopping the timer in :20.059. The final clock- ing earned a speed index of 87.
“I just let her do her job,” winning jockey Jesus Salazar said. “Sometimes, when you over ride them, you just get in their way. She did everything perfect today.”
Now a back-to-back winner of the Indiana Grand Classic, A Tacky Chick improved her record to 12-4(2)-2-2 and the $26,664 winner’s share of the purse increased her bankroll to $90,207 for Gilberto Barraza’s 3 Colts Racing Corp. The filly is trained by Gilberto’s cousin Claudio Barraza, who registered the first stakes win of his year-long training career with the victory.
Double Bar S Ranch bred A Tacky Chick out of A Chick Of Class, winner of the 2003 Heritage Place Futurity-G1. The mare has produced 10 winners from 14 starters, including top money earner First
In Class DBS, winner of the 2013 Leo Stakes-G1. A Tacky Chick is her second stakes winner.
Keen Liaison (Sixes Liaison-Keens Cat) finished second under Samuel Mendez for owner James Black and trainer Erin Thompson.
Apollitical Regard (Apollitical Jess-Cartel Regards) and Cesar Esqueda finished third for owner Duke Racing, LLC and Anthony Cunningham.
One Fantastic Gal (Favorite Cartel-Fantastic Six) was fourth and was followed by BP Tres Seis Policy (Tres Seis-CC Policy), CB Come Fly With Me (Desirio-Miss Scarlet) and Prudish Cartel (Corona Cartel-Behold This Check).
