and the 2015 Champion 2 Year Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
Jess Good Candy came back at three to win the Mr Master Bug Handicap and the Ruidoso Derby-G1. He also won his trial to the All American Derby-G1, but came up short not and did not qualify to the finals. He was retired at the end of 2016, undefeated in his eight starts with earnings of $2,014,703.
Good Reason SA is the sire of Jess Good Candy, who is a full-brother to racing ROM earner Mr Candy Reason. They were both foaled in 2013. Good Reason SA was the 2011 Champion Aged Stallion with wins
in the Champion of Champions-G1 and Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G2. He raced for three years and was a stakes winner in each of his years on the track, with victories in the 2009 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 at two and the Golden State Derby-G1 at three.
Good Reason SA is by Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, by Phone Trick and out of Evil Elaine by Medieval Man. Teddy appears in the pedigree of Favorite Trick through his sire and dam. His crosses come from Phone Trick, by Clever Trick, who shows Teddy in his sire Icecapade, who is out of Shenanigans, out of Bold Irish by Fighting Fox by Sir Gallahad III by Teddy. Over The Phone, the dam of Phone Trick, is by Finnegan whose dam is Last Wave by Bull Lea by Bull Dog by Teddy. The dam of Over The Phone is Prattle by Mr Busher, who is by War Admiral and out of Baby League out of La Troienne by Teddy. The dam of Prattle is Tsumani, who is out of Ocean Brief by Roman by Sir Gallahad III.
Queen Of Appeals, the dam of Good Reason SA, is by First Down Dash and out
of Totally Illegal by Tolltac by Beduino TB. Totally Illegal is out of Azures Marge by A Zure Request by Azure Te TB. The dam of Azures Marge is Dynamo Watch by Tiny Watch.
The blood of Teddy in the pedigree
of Queen Of Appeals comes from several sources that we have already seen in Dash For Cash; Beduino TB and Tiny Watch. We can add Azure Te to this list of horses that carry the blood of Teddy. Azure Te’s dam Blue One is out of One Bell, whose dam is White Favor by Sir Gallahad III.
Jess Send Candy started her career as a broodmare by producing five foals in 2011 and 2012. They are Jess Send Me Candy, Send Me This Wagon, Send Your Candy, and This Candys Awesome - all born in 2011. The fifth foal was Honeymoon Candy, born in 2012. These foals were all sired by PYC Paint Your Wagon and they account for three of the four 2016 stakes winners out of Jess Send Candy.
Stakes winner Send Me This Wagon
is a 2011 mare that has won three stakes, including the 2014 Canterbury Park Derby and the 2015 Canterbury Distaff Bonus Challenge. Her 2016 stakes win came in the AQHA Members Plus Stakes. She started 2017 with a second in the Charger Bar Handicap-G1. She has 20 total lifetime starts with 10 wins and $179,310 in earnings.
This Candys Awesome is the next stakes winner in this set of foals. She has won five stakes races, including the 2014 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby- RG3, 2015 Decketta Stakes-G3, 2015 Easy Date Handicap, and 2015 Higheasterjet Handicap-G3. Her 2016 stakes win was in the Junos Request Stakes-G2. Her overall record shows that she has 21 starts with 11 wins and earnings of $434,265.
Honeymoon Candy is the only 2012
foal out of Jess Send Candy. She claimed
a victory in the 2016 Prairie Meadows
Distaff Challenge and was also third in the Remington Park Distaff Challenge-G3. Honeymoon Candy has five wins in 17 starts, with $85,587 earned on the track.
PYC Paint Your Wagon, the sire of these three stakes winners, is a 4-time stakes winner himself, scoring in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and Texas Classic Derby-G1. PYC Paint Your Wagon earned $889,581, with seven wins in sixteen starts. He is
the sire of over $26 million, including 90 stakes winners.
PYC Paint Your Wagon is by Corona Cartel and out of Dashin Follies by Strawfly Special. PYC Paint Your Wagon carries the blood of Teddy through such bloodlines as Dash For Cash, Chicks Beduino, Azure Te TB and Strawfly Special. We can also add some Teddy blood through Sizzling Lil, the dam of Corona Chick who is the dam of Corona Cartel. Sizzling Lil is out of Lilsalady TB, who is out of Here’s To Lil who has a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 4 to Bull Dog by Teddy.
One of the observations we can make with Special Effort, Strawfly Special, and Genuine Strawfly is the link these three stallions make to Teddy and his influence today. Special Effort has five crosses to Teddy in 10 generations. This is a percent of blood of 8.79%. Strawfly Special shows 9 crosses
to Teddy in 10 generations. This is a percent of blood of 5.89%. This is highest percent of blood between Strawfly Special and any of the stallions in his pedigree that show at least seven crosses to him. Genuine Strawfly shows 16 crosses to Teddy in 10 generations. This is a percent of blood of 4.69%, the third highest percent of blood in the pedigree of Genuine
Strawfly to a common ancestor with at least six crosses to him. The top horse on this list is Bull Dog TB by Teddy, with a percent of blood of 5.27% with at least seven crosses to Genuine Strawfly. The great pedigree man Jay Pumphrey believed that any horse in a pedigree that had a percent of blood above 3% had an influence on the individual.
Foundation SireS
Teddy was born a long time ago, so why is the blood of Teddy and other foundation sires important to our pedigree study today?
The answer to this question begins with the definition of a breed and our understanding of how a breed functions through the horse’s genome. A breed is
a group of animals that have common ancestors with common characteristics or genes that are passed down through the generations.
When we look at a pedigree, we will see many crosses to the foundation horses in that pedigree. We see names like Three Bars TB, Leo, Top Deck TB and Depth Charge TB as foundation animals in the pedigrees. Then as we go further back, we see names like Peter McCue, Old Billy, Domino TB, Ben Brush and Teddy TB as foundation sires. It is the genes of these foundation horses that form the common characteristics that make
a breed.
This is what we see with Jenuine Joy
and Jess Send Candy and the blood of Teddy. When we go back 10 generations
in the pedigree of Jenuine Joy, we see that she has 28 crosses to Teddy. She has more crosses to Teddy than any other horse found in her pedigree in all 10 generations. Her son, Imperial Eagle, has 21 crosses in 10 generations. When we look at the pedigree of Jess Send Candy, we see that she has only eight crosses to Teddy in 10 generations, but her son Jess Good Candy has 15 crosses to Teddy in 10 generations. PYC Paint Your Wagon has 14 crosses to Teddy, and when we combine that with Jess Send Candy, it gives the foals of these two 10 crosses to Teddy in 10 generations.
The identification of the horse’s genome further helps us understand the working of the breed. The horse’s genome tells us that we are working with about 20,000 genes that come together to form the genetic makeup of the individual. These base genes provided by our foundation horses are being recycled in each new generation. Teddy is
a part of that process, and he has proven to be significant to the breed with Jenuine Joy and Jess Send Candy, the 2016 Speedhorse Broodmares of the Year.
