John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2
ONE PROUD EAGLE
by Michael Compton
One Proud Eagle, the Kindergarten Futurity-G3 winner in May, racked up his second graded event in his freshman season
with a game victory in the $151,250 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Los Alamitos on Oct. 29.
With Tony Guymon riding for trainer John Cooper, One Proud Eagle was a bit fractious
at the gate. Despite being
bumped away from the bar-
rier, he raced in contention
throughout the 350-yard
fixture. With a strong late
surge, One Proud Eagle
took to the lead in the lane
and drew clear to prevail by
1/2-length. He stopped the
clock in :17.525, earning a
speed index of 94.
“The (assistant starter) can’t touch him on his head,”
Cooper shared with the media following the race. “He doesn’t like that. He just doesn’t want you to touch his head or he gets a little hot. I don’t know why he became that way. It just happened. One Proud Eagle is the ugly duckling that turned into a swan.”
A swan indeed. In winning for the 4th time in 7 lifetime starts, One Proud Eagle, a California homebred for
Ronald Hartley, improved his bankroll to $264,105 and now boasts a record of 7-4-1-1.
“The horse has talent, for sure,” Hartley said.
One Proud Eagle is the first stakes winner for his dam, the winning mare Guy Chasing.
Born To B Bad (Freighttrain B-Dosredanya) & jockey Adrian Ramos finished a close 2nd after leading in the
lane. The Texas-bred gelding races for Melissa Slayton & Cody Bowling and is trained by Tammy Johnson. Race favorite Kissed By An Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Dreaming Of Kisses) & Cesar DeAlba were 3rd. The Idaho-bred gelding, who was in search of his 3rd straight victory & 2nd stakes win, is a homebred for Mark & Peggy Brown and is trained by Rafael Orozco. Followed by Stelfast (Stel Corona-The Goodbye Kisser), Faster Than Hasta (Hasta
Be Fast-Leadmetoyourladder), Fooseability (Foose-Checkcashingability), Hoot And Holler (Carters Cartel-Fly Thru Fire), Apollitical
Boogie (Apollitical Jess-Shakin Ana Dashin) and Rpainted Pistol (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Rdustys Chicks). Paint A Candy Storm was scratched.

JESS GOOD REASON
by Tracy Gantz
Jess Good Reason never wavers from any chal- lenge. As a 3 year old taking on her elders, she ran an excellent second to Sass Me Blue in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1. So it wasn’t surprising to see Jess Good Reason tri- umph against 3 year olds in the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 on Oct. 29.
Breaking from post six under jockey Oscar Peinado, Jess Good Reason
popped out of the gate on
top. Several tried to catch
her, but Jess Good Reason held them off by 1/2-length in :19.731 for the 400 yards.
Paul Jones trains Jess Good Reason for John and Cina Sperry, and Jones noted that “John has been one of my longest and most loyal owners.” John Sperry watched the race at home,
while his wife, Cina, represented them at Los Alamitos.
“I’m so happy that we got this win for John,” Jones said. “Early on Jess Good Reason was bad in the gates, but we’ve spend a lot
of times in the gates and the starting crew has been great helping me work with this filly.”
Preston and Karen Cloud bred Jess Good Reason in Oklahoma from
winner Jess Call Me Tieing. The Sperrys bought the mare and foal after a friend of Jones in Oklahoma contacted the trainer, who had conditioned Jess Good Reason’s sire, Good Reason SA. Jess Call Me Tieing has produced 100% money earners from four starters, including stakes- placed Make It Jess. Jess Good Reason is her top earner.
Birrell Farms’ homebred BF Fooserageous (Foose-BF Outrageous) and jockey Adrian Ramos took second. Matthew Fales trains
the filly. Toughie (Stel Corona-Hard Lining) finished third for jockey Cesar DeAlba, trainer Charles Treece, and owner Chuck Stojan.
Followed by Country Boy 123 (Country Chicks Man-Very Dashin 123), Corona Suerte (Coronas Prospect-Shakemandzoom), Keyper (First Moonflash-This Chicks Stylish), El Compa JV (Mr Jess Perry-My Lady First), Royal Quick Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Rustys Quickid), Lonely In Front BR (Favorite Cartel- Strength In Numbers), For Sweet Jess (One Sweet Jess-For Some Cash) and BM Casina Royale (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Joyalty).
