WHATA CORONA

Whata Corona earned his first stakes victory in the $25,000 B&W Stakes for 2 year olds at Los Alamitos on Oct. 29.
Ridden by Ramon Sanchez, What A Corona defeated Duck Dash N Go by a neck while covering 350 yards in :17.635 and posting a career-best 91 speed index. Paul Jones prepped the colt, whom he co-owns with James W. Bailey, Vaughn Cook, and Jimmy Harrell, et al. The colt has won four of seven outs, and the $12,000 winner’s share of the purse bumped his earnings to $26,145. Whata Corona made his debut with 1/2-length victory in a 300-yard maiden dash
at Los Alamitos on April 9. Campaigned at Ruidoso Downs last summer, he won two of four starts, includ- ing a 400-yard Rainbow Futurity-G1 trial on July 9.
Whata Corona was bred in Colorado by R.D. Hubbard. A $177,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the colt is the first winner from two starters produced by winner Natalie Dash. Whata Corona’s second dam, the multiple stakes placed mare A Tempting Chick, was a finalist in the ’03 Governor’s Cup Derby.
Duck Dash N Go (Coronas Fast Dash-Duck Mea Running) was prepped by Monty Arrossa for owner Vince Treyes. Cruz Mendez rode the bay filly.
Jess Mas (One Sweet Jess-Corona Mas Fina) finished third for owners Oscar Andrade and Dr. Steve Burns. Jesus Ayala rode the homebred filly for trainer Elena Andrade.
Jouet With Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Perrier Jouet) ran fourth and was followed by Doctor Fantastic (Fantastic Corona Jr-Docs Check), Eagles Nest (One Famous Eagle-A Delightful Legacy), and Brimmin Corona (Fantastic Corona Jr-Brimin Special). Catchin Fire Z was scratched.
