Dash For Cash Futurity-G2
EYE N CAPO
by John Moorehouse
Eye N Capo picked an optimum time to make what his jockey described as a perfect run. The two-year-old gelding went wire-to-
wire and won by daylight in the $384,615 Dash For Cash Futurity-G2, held Oct. 8 at Lone Star Park.
The pre-race favorite at 3-2 odds at post time, Eye N Capo left no doubt in this race. He broke on top from the inside starting gate, and led by a 1/2-length margin at the first call. Eye N Capo doubled that separation by the time he entered the stretch and maintained a 1-length margin as he crossed the finish line.
Jockey Damian Martinez rode Eye N Capo, who covered the 400 yards in :19.511, good for a 99 speed index. That time was about 1/4-second faster than his :19.758 per- formance in the Sept. 24 trials.
Martinez praised Eye N Capo for finding “another gear” down the stretch and felt the gelding could have maintained the pace even if the distance of the race had been 440 or 550 yards.
The two-year-old gelding improved to 2-0 in as many career outs. Owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor banked a $153,846 payday that gives Eye N Capo a whopping $156,546 bank- roll. Not too shabby for a horse who sold for $8,500 in the Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
It also reaped another sig- nature and high-paying win for trainer Adrian Huitron, who, as of mid-October, ranked among the top 10 trainers in the AQHA stand- ings in both total victories and money won.
“He showed a great performance, running for
the first time in the night,
and pulled up fine,” Huitron told Stallionesearch.com in a video filmed right after the race.
Huitron added that Eye N Capo “looked like a champion” during the two weeks between futurity qualifying, which saw the gelding post the top trial time, and the stakes final.
“He proved to us tonight that he has the potential to run,” Huitron said.
“Everything just came out perfect. He left great. He never quit running,” said Martinez. “He’s a small little horse but he has a big heart,” the jockey observed.
Dee and Betty Raper bred Eye N Capo, one of two starters/winners thus far produced by his dam, Satisfeyen. The Rapers home-bred Satisfeyen, who tallied one victory during her racing career.
Duponte (American Runaway-Havanah Goodtime) bobbled somewhat at the start, but recovered to finish a solid second for owners Bobby
Cox, Homero Paredes and Kristen Ashley Paredes. Josue Ponce trains the colt, who
won both the Heritage Place Futurity-G1 and the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3 earlier this year and had jockey Manuel Gutierrez in the irons.
Duponte won his Dash For Cash Futurity trial wire-to-wire for the 2nd-fastest qualifying time. Dash For Cash Futurity trial winner and 4th-fastest qualifier, Political Mess (Apollitical
Jess-Jenuine Joy) secured 3rd-place honors. The gelding is owned by the Double A Ranch and trained by Kelli Martin. Esgar Ramirez drew the riding assignment.
Followed by Paint My Pilot (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Ms Pilot Point), Katharsis (American Runaway-All About Ease), Carmel Diamond (Dictorial-Sixes Diamond), Cobra Stone (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Deedashing), Murcielago (American Runaway-First Fervor), Flyin Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Fast Flyin Prize) & Strawflyin Tac (Tac It Like A Man-Buds N Blossoms).
