CHAINMAN
by Michael Cusortelli
Chainman extended his win streak to three races and earned his first stakes victory in the $268,464 Hobbs America Futurity-G2 at
Zia Park on Oct. 9.
Campaigned by Benito Arenivas of Odessa,
Texas, and sent to post as the 6-5 favorite in the full field of 10 two year olds, Chainman took the win by 1 1/4-lengths in :19.957 for the 400 yards. Bonifacio Quiroz rode the bay colt for trainer Harvey Baeza.
Chainman recorded the fastest qualifying time when he won the first of seven Hobbs America Futurity trials by 1/2-length in :19.794 on Sept. 24.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Chainman has now won four of five outs, and the $128,863 winner’s share of the Hobbs America Futurity purse bumped his earnings to $152,463. After he broke his maiden in
his June 17 career debut, winning a 300-yard maiden-special-weight dash at Ruidoso by 3/4-length, the colt stretched out in dis-
tance and ran sixth in a 400-yard Rainbow Futurity-G1 trial on July 9.
After a short freshening, Chainman returned to the races and has won all three of his outs at the current Zia Park meet.
“He seems to be getting better every time he races,” Arenivas said.
The colt was bred in
Texas by the late Kim
Kessinger and RSG Racing
Ltd. out of 2-time winner
Ask The Question, who is
half-sister to three stakes
winners including 2-time
2009 Champion sophomore
Inseperable and Grade 3
winner Seperate Interest.
Chainman’s second dam, A
Delightful Legacy, won the
2003 All American Juvenile
Invitational-RG3 at Ruidoso Downs and was
a finalist in that season’s Los Alamitos Million Futurity-G1. Chainman traces back to his fourth dam, Fortune Of Delight. A stakes- winning and Grade 1 placed foundation mare of the successful breeding program of the late Gwendolyn Eaves, Fortune Of Delight was the AQHA Broodmare Of The Year in 1999 and produced Champions and Grade 1 winners A Delightful Dasher and Hes My Dasher.
Chainman’s victory in the Hobbs America Futurity-G2 earned the colt a berth in the 440-yard $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 at Zia Park on Dec. 4, and Arenivas added that the colt would be pointed to that race.
“I think this colt should be able to handle that extra distance,” he said.
2nd-placed Valorus (Valiant Hero-Jess A Lil Bit More) races for Melissa Soto. The fifth-fastest qualifier.
a $15,000 purchase from breeder Bobby D. Cox at
last year’s Heritage Place Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City, was ridden by Oscar Cordova for trainer Taurino
Gutierrez. Seventh-fastest qualifier Eaglelistic (Flyingwitheagles-American Gator) finished third for owner Donnie E. Johnson. Cody Reynolds prepped and Salvador Martinez rode the gelding, whose season resume includes a third-place finish in the June 19 Four Corners Futurity at SunRay Park.
Soar Like An Eagle (One Famous Eagle- Petriflying), One More Thats It (Tres Seis- Onemoreglassofwine), Put A Shine On It (Mighty B Valiant-She Travels), Mojo Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Jump Down First), The Fast Eagle C (One Famous Eagle-Three Past Six), Jess Prize Me (Mr Jess Perry-Fast Prize Zoom), and Lethal Flight (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Lethal Delight) completed the order of finish.
