Taylors Toastin Papa may have been an 18-1 longshot in the Feb. 25 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Louisiana Downs, but his breeding showed he had the class to win a stakes race. His second dam, the Thoroughbred Sin Tacha, produced 2002 World Champion Streakin Sin Tacha.
She Is A Fast Dash broke on top from post two in the 350-yard Mr Jess Perry, and favored Louisiana Rangler on the rail came up to wrest the lead from
the filly. Meanwhile, Taylors
Toastin Papa moved up from
fourth early on the outside.
He and jockey Donald
Watson kept edging forward
and grabbed the victory
by a neck in :17.591 over
Louisiana Rangler.
Though this was Taylors Toastin Papa’s first stakes victory, he had come close
at 2, when he finished second in the 2009 Louisiana
Juvenile Stakes and LQHBA Sale Invitational Stakes. Kevin Broussard trains the now 5-year-old horse for Gerald Libersat, who bought Taylors Toastin Papa for $82,000 at the 2008 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Yearling Sale. It was the second- highest price of the sale.
Taylor VanBebber, the daughter of trainer Janet VanBebber and the late champion trainer Steve VanBebber, bred Taylors
Toastin Papa in Louisiana. Taylors Toastin Papa’s dam, Tacha La Jolla, is a winning full sister to Streakin Sin Tacha, who was trained and owned by Janet VanBebber. Tacha La Jolla has produced five winners from six starters, including Pantera Sin Tacha, who finished third in the 2008 Louisiana Breeders’ Laddie Futurity-RG2.
Louisiana Rangler (Jess
Louisiana Blue-Rangler Print), ridden by Bobby Ransom, trained by Louis Lee, and owned by Kim McKenzie, most recently had won the 2011 Louisiana Champions Day Classic Stakes-RG2.
Heza Gonna Dash (Heza Fast Dash- Iwanna Dash) finished third with Martin Rubalcava aboard. Winner of last year’s Don Cravins Stakes, the gelding is owned by Oscar Alcantara and trained by Barbara Alcantara.
