los alamitos Maiden stakes
Kool Million
by Stacy Pigott
Ed Allred’s Kool Million finished strong to score a head victory over the 29-1 longshot One Famous Ferragamo in the richest ever running of the Los
Alamitos Maiden Stakes on Feb. 26. While not an official stakes race, the rich $151,750 purse of the Maiden Stakes makes it noteworthy just the same.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez, Kool Million broke nicely from post one and was right behind Warm Form and One Famous Ferragamo at the midway point. The three continued to battle, but in the end the powerfully built Kool Million proved to be too strong as he recorded his second victory from three career starts. The gelded son of Bono Jazz covered the distance in :17.642 while earning $63,735.
Kool Million was one of three horses saddled by Jose Flores for all-time leading breeder Ed Allred in the 350-yard Maiden Stakes. The other two were fourth-place finisher Warm Form and Bawdy, who had troubled start and finished 10th.
Kool Million is out of the winning Chicks Beduino mare Kool As Ever, who has also produced graded stakes qualifier Double Kool. His second dam is Champion Corona Kool.
Owned by Deleyco Race Team Corporation, One Famous Ferragamo (First Down Dash-One Famous Lady) earned $25,798 for finishing second. Eduardo Nicasio rode for trainer Paul Jones. Also trained by Jones, Thiago and Theo Trevisani and Jose Dollo’s Jennifers Challenge (FDD Dynasty- Miga Ja) finished third with Cody Jensen up.
The top three were followed by Warm Form (Walk Thru Fire-Feminista), Chicks Boudro (Chicks Beduino-Beat Your Pants Off), Oceanik (Ocean Runaway-Jess Genuine), New Look (Walk Thru Fire- Make Over), First Element (Volcom-As Blazin Goes), Tabasco Special Dash (First Down Dash-Abstinence), who was disqualified from eighth to ninth, and Bawdy (Bono Jazz-Firstist).
Denim n Diamonds Handicap

Don’t be surprised to see Reina Del Fuego going the distance in future races. Jose and Gustavo De La Torre’s homebred filly went flying to the front
in the final 100 yards of the Denim N Diamonds Handicap, held Feb. 25 at Los Alamitos.
After a rather sluggish break, Reina Del Fuego still trailed the leaders by a good two lengths enter- ing the stretch but turned on the jets to beat Touch Of Paso to the finish line by an official half-length margin of victory.
“She broke a little slow, but she flew late,” jockey Adrian Loza said immediately after the race. “Touch Of Paso broke great and she was ahead of us by a good margin, but this mare just kept fighting and never quit.”
The victory produced a $13,750 payday, and improved Reina Del Fuego’s total earnings to $34,465. Reina Del Fuego now holds three wins in eight outs, and both her runner-up finishes have come in stakes events. She’ll now start gearing up for trials to the Vessel Maturity-G1 in June.
Jose De La Torre bred Reina Del Fuego out of Reina Del Sur, a 2003 mare he also owns. Reina Del Sur has two foals, both victorious starters, but Reina Del Fuego is the only offspring in black type.
Touch Of Paso (Jumpn-Queen Judea) secured runner-up honors, and now has logged a first- or second-place finish in seven of her past eight starts. The filly is owned by Larry Konecne, trained by Jim Hanson and had jockey Cody Jensen aboard. Oh La Traffic (Hawkish-Coupers First Dash) hit the board third for Stan Young. The Bret Vickery trainee was ridden by Francisco Rubio.
Jumpn Apache (Jumpn-Mirthy), Warm It
Up (Walk Thru Fire-Waymaker Miss) and Gettit Together (Separatist-Seronka) completed the field. Getit Together was the overwhelming favorite, but threw her head at the start and never recovered.
