AQHA Animal Welfare Commission Meets
Representatives from the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission and its alliance partners met Feb. 8 in Dallas to receive updates
from previous meetings and to compare and discuss animal welfare policies. Chaired by Jim Heird, executive professor and coordina- tor of the equine sciences initiative at Texas A&M University, the commission’s vision is to ensure the American Quarter Horse is treated with kindness and respect under all circum- stances. Heird stressed the importance of having a united front in protecting our horses, ensuring humane treatment and training poli- cies, and in regards to medication and drug testing rules.
Willie Joe Hunt Passes Away
Willie Joe Hunt.
Willie Joe Hunt, 78, passed away Feb. 22 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. The former jockey and trainer lived in the Sallisaw, Oklahoma, area for many years and was well-known through- out the horse racing community. He and his wife, Shirley, have been involved in horse racing for many years.

Owned by Lucas Racing, Inc., who raised and raced him as well as his brothers, World Champion Waver Carver and three- time Champion Ocean Runaway, Trisk earned $254,233 on the track, winning the Southern California Derby-G1 and Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes.
Most recently, Hunt helped keep the former Blue Ribbon Downs open as a training center. He is survived by three sons, Jimmie, David & Billy, a daughter, Sue, and numerous grandchil- dren, relatives and friends.

Grade 1 winner Trisk si 102 (First Down Dash-Runaway Wave, Runaway Winner) was euthanized in late February due to complica- tions from laminitis. Trisk had been standing at stud in Brazil and was scheduled to stand
