The second half of the season at the Jockey Club of Sorocaba was shaken up with an unprecedented “Grand Prize.” Founded by Érico Braga, of Haras Prata, came the American GP Cup 2012 - Woorka, on Sept 29-30. One of the biggest news items for this Grand Prix was the participation of foals of 2 years of age with a Northern Hemisphere birthdate. It was a total success!
According to Ralph Lima Terra, president of the Jockey Club de Sorocaba, this was the first time the Jockey held a strong tournament in the second half of the season with high rewards and differentiated actions. The racehorse has been greatly valued and
Brazil has invested heavily in cutting-edge genetics. The same results are also significant for the United States market.
“The idea of running the GP American Cup at the Jockey Club de Sorocaba in the second half of
the year only adds to the other races. The five major awards all occur in the first half of the year and, for all involved—trainers, jockeys, breeders and competi- tors—is important to the stables and to have racing available with impressive prizes throughout the year,” reaffirmed Érico Braga.
The GP was formatted based on other great prizes we have in Brazil, with the intention of rewarding the greatest possible number of competitors. Another important point, which was different in this event, was the age of the animals. Some mares imported from the United States foaled in the first half of the year and the owners did not know what to do with these foals. They were at a disadvantage compared to those born in July, August and September.
The American Cup GP was developed not only to give these animals a chance to show their quality on the track, but also to open up a new market for the sale of these “late-born” foals.
