One Dashing Eagle’s last race of the year was his most impressive, as Ramon Sanchez guided the colt to a 2 1/4-length win in the $1,073,000 Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos on Nov. 4.

Jess Being Valiant had a troubled start in the trials to the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 and missed qualifying to the finals. Instead, the bay colt returned to win the $30,000 Golden State Juvenile on Nov. 4 at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Saul Ramirez Jr., Jess Being Valiant broke well from post eight and had clear sailing throughout the 400-yard race. Bullet In The Gun, in the three lane, and Fit For Glory on the outside were also right there, though neither could beat Jess Being Valiant, who went on to win by a neck in :19.687. He took home $16,500 to owner Howard Nichols. Joe Bassett trains the colt, who has won three of five starts and was sixth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Bred by Lance Robinson and Max Anderson, Jess Being Valiant is out of Jess Sass Me, the California Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly of 2007. Jess Being Valiant is from her third crop, which also includes a winning full brother, Just Call Me Valiant. Her 2009 crop included Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge winner Valiant Jess and Grade 1 finalist and Ruidoso Juvenile runner- up Jess Sass Dash. In all, she has seven starters from 13 foals, with five winners and two stakes winners.
In second was Bullet In The Gun (Stel Corona- Summertime Dash), owned by James Azevedo and Boyles Family Trust and Paul Jones. Jones also trains the gelding, who was ridden by Cesar DeAlba.
Fit For Glory (Ivory James-Ima Perry Girl) was third with Ricky Ramirez in the saddle for trainer Joe Bassett. Lisa Beauprez and Thomas Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury Jr. own the gelding.
High School Secrets (No Secrets Here-Summertime High) was fourth, followed by Line Slinger (TR Dasher- Singles Scene), Quieros Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Quiero Mas), Snowdacious (Snowbound TB-Alota Traffic),
Stel Redneck (Stel Corona-Redneck Cowgirl), Tiny Taz (Tinys First Corona-Snape On Gone) and Mane Event (Carters Cartel-Tylerette).
syndication was being considered, the De La Torres indicated that the colt would undergo minor surgery during the winter and return to the racetrack for the lucrative derbies in 2013.
“I enjoy it every time he goes out here. I would be sad if he didn’t come back,” said De La Torre.
“I’m not disappointed that we’re not in
the Two Million,” Carmona added. “It would have been a pleasure to run in it and win the Bonanza. But I’m happy with what we’ve done...very happy. The horse came through for us. It’s great!”
When One Dashing Eagle goes to stud— and he eventually will—he will be joining half-brother One Sweet Jess, by Mr Jess Perry, who won the Golden State Million in 2010 for Jose and Gustavo De La Torre and currently stands at Burns Ranch in Menifee, California. One Dashing Eagle is sired by One Famous Eagle, who is breaking records for a freshman sire thanks, in part, to his outstanding son. One Sweet Jess and One Dashing Eagle were both bred by the Allred Brothers and are out of One Sweet Dash, a full sister to leading sire Walk Thru Fire. A multiple graded stakes winner her- self, One Sweet Dash is now the dam of earners of more than $3 million, with five winners and three stakes winners from seven starters.
“The Allred Brothers’ breeding operation was not that big, but every horse that you buy from those guys you’ll get your money’s worth,” said De La Torre. “They aren’t with us anymore, but their family is still working on their breed- ing operation, and that’s a good thing.”
Jerry Allred, the last of the famous Allred Bros., died February 25 at age 84. Jerry’s brothers Harvey and Dale preceded him in death. The Allred Bros. were inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2000.
“He doesn’t need to do anything else to prove that he is an amazing animal. I just thank God that we’ve been blessed with all these races,” said De La Torre of One Dashing Eagle. “We’re not something special. If Paul (Jones) would have had him, or anybody else, he would have done the same thing. He does it for himself every time.”
Separate Interest ran the race of his life to finish second under jockey Eduardo Nicasio. Owned by the Estate of Kim Kessinger, Separate Interest (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy) was trained by Mike Casselman. The grey colt was making his first stakes appear- ance after breaking his maiden in September.
Show finisher Amore La Blue (Mr Jess Perry- Blues Girl Too) challenged early and settled for third under Saul Ramirez Jr. Joe Bassett trains the filly, who is owned by Lucky Seven Ranch. She entered the Golden State Million with a two-race winning streak to her credit.
The top three were followed across the
wire by Henoshersecret (No Secrets Here- Shenoshercorona), Fires Blazin (Walk Thru Fire-Thatsa Blazin Chick), Tres Coronas Mas (Tres Seis-Coronas First Down), Gold Flames On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Gold Cult), Scoop Of Sunshine (First Down Dash-Budderfly Effect), Bingo (Tres Seis-Corona Blurr), and Watch Linda Ballet (Mr Jess Perry-Sky Chicks).
