Anticipation was high for the 2012 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale when it was announced that the sale would
include a massive consignment from the United States Department of the Treasury. The horses were seized in June as part of an alleged Los Zetas money laundering operation.
According to a Department of Justice press release, United States Attorney Robert Pitman and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Special Agent in Charge Steve McCollough announced that the consignment brought approximately $8.8 million, headed by sale topper A Dash
Of Sweet Heat, who sold for a Heritage Place record of $1 million. The federal government retains possession of approximately 45 Quarter Horses including Tempting Dash, Mr Piloto, Dashin Follies, Separate Fire, and an unnamed yearling. Approximately 100 broodmares were sold prior to the auction for $35,000. Pitman noted that while the individual defendents in this case will face criminal trial in the spring, the proceeds from the sale of the horses will be held in escrow pending a forfeiture action.
Consigned by VSE on behalf of Department of the Treasury, A Dash Of Sweet Heat was purchased by Julianna Hawn Holt, who had bred the filly and sold her last year
as the $650,000 highest-selling yearling at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale to the A Dash Of Sweet Heat Partnership. The now 2-year-old filly, whose lone start was a third-place finish in a trial to the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, is sired by Mr Jess Perry and is the next-to-last foal out of multiple champion Corona Cash, who has been pensioned from Hawn Holt’s broodmare band. The million-dollar purchase price is
the highest ever paid for a 2-year-old racing Quarter Horse and is second-highest ever in Quarter Horse racing, behind the $1.1 million paid for 1981 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Champion Queen For Cash in 1982.
Judy McDonald spent a combined half- million on the second- and third-highest sellers, both 2-year-old fillies by Corona Cartel out of The Long Straw. The Cartel Straw ran second in the Kindergarten Futurity-G1 earlier this year, while Super Long Straw was a finalist in the same race. Their dam, The Long Straw, was the fourth-highest seller to Grant Farms LLC for $170,000.
The government consignment contributed to an overall average of $15,541, up significantly from last year’s average of $8,494. In fact, the gross sales, average and median prices were all records for the Fall Mixed Sale. The top 24 highest-sellers were all consigned by VSE on behalf of Department of the Treasury. Preliminary results, including sale statistics broken down by foals in utero, weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds, broomares, and mixed horses, can be found on page 64.
