JM MISTER DESTINY

Very few futurities can offer as lucrative a purse as Ruidoso Downs does for its con- solation to the All American Futurity-G1. The Sept. 5 All American Juvenile boasted a record purse of $500,000, a fittingly handsome amount of money for a group of horses that just missed qualifying for the Futurity. That was an increase of $300,000 over the purse for the 2015 Juvenile.
JM Mister Destiny won his 440-yard All American trial in :21.747, missing the final by .042 seconds after being bumped at the start. He made up for that in the Juvenile, break- ing third under jockey Manuel Gutierrez and then powering to the front. JM Mister Destiny scored by an easy 1 1/4 lengths in :21.560.
“He had a headwind in the trial,” said Lisa Saumell, who handles the New Mexico division of Paul Jones’ stable. “He ran a really good race in the Juvenile and came back really good.”
Saumell and Jones train JM Mister Destiny for Javier Marquez’s J & M Racing and Farm. The owner, who lives in Monahans, Texas, won the 2014 All American Futurity with JM Miracle, trained by Umberto Belloc. Marquez
bought JM Mister Destiny for $85,000 at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
Saumell broke JM Mister Destiny at the Jones operation’s ranch in Tularosa, N.M.
“I’ve always liked this
horse—he’s really good-
bodied,” said Saumell.
“He’s coming into himself.
He’s a pretty nice horse to
be around, and he’s very
sound. I think he’s going to be a really good three year old.”
Though he didn’t qualify for any of Ruidoso’s three major futurities, JM Mister Destiny ran well in all of his trials. In his debut, he finished third, losing by just a neck and a nose, in his Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial.
Unlucky to draw the outside in his trial
for the Rainbow Futurity-G1, he nevertheless scored by a length in :20.172 for 400 yards. He won his All American trial by a neck.
“There are really good horses in the consolation that may have just caught a headwind,” said Saumell. “Ruidoso really made the consolation worth it.”
Saumell sent all of the Jones competitors from All American weekend back to the ranch for some well-deserved rest.
“It’s been a long summer for these two year olds,” she said. “We ask a lot of them in a very short window. JM Mister
Destiny is at the ranch taking a break, and then we’ll go on with him.”
Saumell is hopeful that the gelding can do well in the rich All American Derby-G1 next year in his three-year-old season.
A son of leading stallion Mr Jess Perry, he is certainly bred for longevity. John Andreini bred JM Mister Destiny in California from the superior broodmare Dinastia Toll Brz. She is best known as the dam of FDD Dynasty, a Champion at 2 and 3 and now a top sire.
