JRC CALLAS FIRST
by Danny Camp
AWorld Champion won the 440-yard $150,480 Zia Park Championship on Nov. 25. World Champion/2-time Champion JRC Callas First was coming off three consecu- tive wins and he didn’t disappoint in the Zia Park Championship. Breaking from the 6-post, the 5-year-old gelding got the first call and gradually eased away from the field. He was never headed as he finished 1-length in front.
His regular pilot, Damian Martinez, didn’t see the need for much encouragement,
and they crossed the wire in :21.738 to earn a speed index of 91. With the $90,000 first place money, JRC Callas
First has now earned a total
of $479,931. His race record is 15 wins from 23 starts, including 9 additional stakes wins and a New Track Record at Retama Park for 550 yards.
JRC Callas First is owned
by Dana L. and Brian Stroud. who is also his trainer. Bred in Texas by J. R. Cass, the gelding is out of the unraced mare Calla Missy Jane, JRC Callas First is the mare’s only starter.
According to Brian Stroud, “JRC Callas First can be a handful, but he is sound as iron. We gave him a couple of months off last year to rest up. We are looking at the
Sunland Championship in late December and we have lofty goals of having a World Champion for the second straight year.”
Modestly he said, “This horse made me, he has done wonders for my business and has built me a new training facility. Not too shabby for a one time $5,000 claimer.”
When all was said and done, it was Mad About The Moon (First
Moonflash-Streaking Power) who came in second place. His team includes owner David G. Valdez and trainer Juan Gonzalez. Manuel Gutierrez was in the saddle.
Dashin For A Prize (Heza Fast Dash-Fast Prize Angie) overcame a horrible start to finish third. His connections include owner Oscar Moreno and trainer Mario Loza. Esgar Ramirez was handling the reins.
Major Moonflash (First Moonflash-Prima LD), GRC Justplainazoom (Azoom-Luisas Plain Jain), Alis Jumpn (Jumpn-Gloria
