FIRST SWEET MIDNITE
by John Moorehouse
First Sweet Midnite was the favorite at the betting window heading into the Black Gold 440 Championship Futurity. The gelding
met those expectations, winning the $310,000 stakes at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 14.
This victory marked the third win in five career outs for First Sweet Midnite, and the first victory for the two year old in stakes com- pany. Owner Bret Carpenter
reaped a handsome $124,000
payday, improving First
Sweet Midnite’s lifetime
bankroll to $134,870.
Making his maiden out back in June, First Sweet Midnite has hit his stride this fall. His three wins have come in succession, includ- ing a sharp :21.827 run in his Oct. 31 futurity trial, which he won by a commanding
2 1/2-lengths for the fastest qualifying time to the finals.
First Sweet Midnite was even faster in his first career stakes race. The gelding broke on top from the 5-hole and led by a head at the first call. He maintained that slim separation going into the stretch and held on to win the event by a neck.
First Sweet Midnite completed the 440-yard competition in :21.656, posting
a 102 speed index against a 10 mph crosswind. Jimmy Brooks drew the riding assignment for trainer Kevin Willis.
Carpenter also owns First Sweet Midnite’s dam, Midnite Soiree. Bred by Dustin and Rusty Carpenter, First Sweet Midnite becomes the first stakes winner out of the 2007 mare who has also foaled two starters among three offspring.
Brave Heart Won (Apollitical Jess-Fols Zookie Cookie) finished second for owners Michael Taylor and Dwayne Saucier. Taylor also trains the gelding, and G.R. Carter, Jr. did the riding.
Train Story (Freighttrain B-Perry Story), another Willis trainee, finished third by a nose. James Sills is the owner and jockey Daniel Torres drew the riding assignment.
Boogies Special Dash (Walk Thru Fire-Boogie Special), Shaken Pappasito (Pappasito-Shaken Easy Dash), Id Sooner Rush (Rushago-On A Fasternote), Fast Ferarri (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Ferarri Fast Prize), Highway (Jess Zoomin-The Fashion Wagon), Candys Little Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess A Candy Gal) & Country Club Chick (Country Chicks Man-Its High) completed the field.

BYE BYEFREIGHTTRAIN
by John Moorehouse
Kasey Willis quickly realized he had something potentially special in Bye Byefreighttrain.
“The first time I got on him, it felt like
he had that something extra, you know?” the trainer said of the gelding. “He’s just deceiv- ingly strong and moves flawlessly.”
Bye Byefreighttrain notched his fifth win of 2015 and his first in stakes company, winning the $173,000 Oklahoma
Horsemen’s Association
Mystery Futurity at Will
Rogers Downs on Nov. 14.
Bye Byefreighttrain led
at every call of the 350-yard event, finishing the race in :17.484 and registering a 97 speed index. Ridden by Cesar Gomez, the gelding broke on top from the 6-gate, led by a head both at the first call and as he entered the stretch, and crossed the wire first by a neck.
L.P. Frank home-bred Bye Byefreighttrain, whose career bankroll jumped into six figures at $120,141 with the $69,700 payday from this race.
“L.P., he’s a conservative guy. He doesn’t go pay a bunch of horses up in races,” said Willis, who also trained the winner in the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby on the same card. “But when I told him this one can run, he let me do what I wanted with him.”
Frank also owns Bye Bye Bygones, a lightly-raced 2001 mare who has produced six starters among nine offspring. Bye Byefreighttrain becomes the second stakes winner in the brood.
Future plans for Bye Byefreighttrain include running at Hialeah in
Florida before returning to Oklahoma for next year’s Remington Park Derby. “He’s still immature,” Willis said.
“I feel that Cesar Gomez has really helped bring that horse along as much as anybody. He needs a rider with a lot of patience.”
BP Tac Marys Policy (Tac It Like A Man-Marys Southernpolicy) finished second for owner Belinda Arriaga and trainer R.L. Robinson. Jockey Agustin Silva drew the riding assignment. Pollitical Scorpion (Apollitical Jess- Sting Scorpion Sting) finished third. Owned by Jahree Standridge, the Luis Villafranco trainee had Mario Delgado aboard.
Followed by VF Red Surprise (First Prize Stanley-Red Temptress), Fast N Fancy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Fancy), CF Humbuckin (Givinitaroyaleffort-Ohares Secret), VF Floosie (Foose-Wheely Quick), Ms Shaken Cartel (Carters Cartel-Shaken Easy Dash) & Prospecting Again (Coronas Prospect- Mia Madre). Rosas Coronas scratched.
