Baxter Andruss Futurity
EZ FEISTY PATRIOT
by Danny Camp
The weather was a factor in the running of the Baxter Andruss Futurity at Portland Meadows
on Dec. 14, a 400-yard contest worth a total of $26,862. The track was rated sloppy and the weather was dreary.
But, that didn’t stop EZ Feisty Patriot. The 2-year-old filly, who set the fastest qualifying time in the Nov. 23 trials, drew the nine post for the finals.
When the gates opened, EZ Feisty Patriot broke in a bit, but then surged to the front. At the start, however, there was some bumping and brushing. Jockey Javier Matias, who was aboard EZ Feisty Patriot, went to the left handed stick and that effort made the difference.
Matias and EZ Feisty Patriot finished 3/4-length in front, stopping the clock at :20.620 and earning a speed index of 85.
With the first place check of $10,749, the filly has now earned $25,643 and owns a race record of five wins out of eight races. She also finished third in the 2015 Far West Futurity at Portland Meadows and in the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass Downs.
EZ Feisty Patriot is owned/bred by Gary Chumbley and trained by Scott Raley. The filly is out of the mare Easy Verna, who owns a 100 speed index and was named the Northwest Hi-Point Claiming Horse of 1998. Easy Verna has produced nine winners/ROM from 10 starters, including three stakes winners and four stakes placed runners. EZ Feisty Patriot is full-sister to 4-time stakes winner EZ Gamer, who is Easy Verna’s highest money earner.
Avoiding the crowd and the confusion on the inside, CM Secretsinthestraw (No Secrets Here-Im Special Star) ran a steady and even race on the out- side to get the second place check. She is owned by Randy Dickerson and trained by Nick Lowe. Leonel Camacho-Flores was in the saddle.
The photo showed Secretly Fast (No Secrets Here-Shirleys Strawfly) finished in third place under Jorge Rosales. The gelding’s team includes owners Dana Pettibone and Leonard Hammrich, trainer John Harris.
Unleashthedemon (Demon Warlock TB-Cupids Special Fly), FNF Bad Kitty (Fastnfierce-Foxy Speeder), Frankie Valentine (Ocean Runaway-Be Dancing), DQ’d from 4th to 7th was Head Turnin Okey (Okey Dokey Dale-My Fashion Cop), CM Its All About Me (Corona For Me-Mi Fames A Dandy), A Lucky Demon (Demon Warlock-Girl Gone Black) & L Bar D Mr Rare Time (Rare News-Fly Misty Fly) completed the order of finish.
Portland Meadows Fall Derby
CHICKS R GONE
by Michael Compton
Astrong late run from Chicks R Gone carried the three-year-old sorrel gelding to a narrow victory in the $24,900 Portland Meadows Fall Derby at Portland Meadows on Nov. 23.
Ridden by Jake Samuels, Chicks R Gone left post position eight cleanly in fourth place and raced in fourth position early in the contest.
Silvies was the early leader, breaking on top from the three-hole and holding the lead until the top of the stretch.
Chicks R Gone, however, kicked it into high gear coming down the lane. The gelding was up with a late rush at the wire, running down the leaders
and defeating Sheza Lolita by a head at the wire. It was another head back to My Best Bunny Yet, who finished third in what was a blanket finish.
Racing in the colors of owner Tryn Espelien, Chicks R Gone clocked 400 yards in :20.081, earning a speed index of 98 winning the Portland Meadows Fall Derby. He also captured the first stakes victory of his 14-race career.
Chicks R Gone, who is conditioned by trainer Hector Magallanes, qualified to the Portland Meadows Fall Derby with a third place finish in the Nov. 9 trials for the eighth fastest time.
The $9,960 winner’s share of the purse increased Chicks R Gone’s bankroll to $26,083. The gelding has placed in four other starts, including the 2014 Far West Futurity, where he finished third.
Bred in Oregon by his trainer, Chicks R
Gone is the first foal produced from the winning mare Oso Gone, who was a finalist in the 2007 Northwest Juvenile Challenge-G3 and the Bitterroot Futurity-RG2 - both at Les Bois Park.
Runner-up Sheza Lolita (Tell Him Twice-Sheza Gator) finished second willingly under jockey Oscar Cervantes to secure the place spot for owner-breeder Jose Pulido and trainer Pablo Rabasa Jr.
My Best Bunny Yet’s strong late bid carried her to a third-place finish under Deborah Hoonan. A homebred for Lee Markholt, My Best Bunny Yet (Best Advice-Royal Time Bunny) is conditioned by Nick Love.
Completing the remaining order of finish were Little Blitzen (Kipas Special-Miss Taylors Cash) in fourth, followed by Casino Royale B (TR Dasher- Dashing Pana), Silvies (Mitey Jody-Termination Point), Hes a Bugin (Sixthirteen-TB-Missy Nickle Bac), Sorelli (Brookstone Bay-Cupids Special Fly) & Diva B Gone (Mighty Invictus-Go Girl Gone).
