HEISTHERISINGSTAR SUGARDADDYB
Long Beach Handicap
ZENDAYA
by Tracy Gantz
As the only former claimer in the seven-horse field, Zendaya went off as the longest shot on the board in the Dec. 5 Long Beach Handicap at Los Alamitos. However, she emphasized the “former” part of that description when she scored her first stakes victory, as well as the first stakes win for owner Clemente Hurtado and trainer Ricardo Guillen.
Zendaya stood quietly in the gate, waiting for the break. When it came, jockey Alejandro Luna got her away on top. Chalala Jess immediately engaged her, and the two fillies battled throughout the rest of the 300 yards. Zendaya received every call and eked out the victory by a nose in :15.520.
Mimi Wells bred Zendaya in California and raced her through five starts. Hurtado claimed Zendaya from Wells for $4,000 when the filly won her second race, in early October. Zendaya then ran two close seconds before winning the Long Beach.
Wells’ homebred Red Hawk Chick, third in the 2007 Desert Classic Futurity, produced Zendaya and three other winners from her four starters. Wells raced the second dam, stakes winner Chicks Tell, who is also the dam of multiple stakes winner Forrest Fire.
Eduardo Nicasio piloted Chalala Jess (Apollitical Jess-Chalala) to second for trainer Felix Gonzalez and owner Alipio Burgos. The filly placed in two earlier stakes.
Johnny Trotter’s homebred Bo Dash Back (Bodacious Dash-Dash Back To Me) finished third with Jesus Ayala aboard. Jaime Gomez trains Bo Dash Back, who has won two races at Los Alamitos.
Completing the field were Miss Sadie Thompson (Walk Thru Fire-Rieda Hay Worth), Nymph (Foose-Elans Last), Knocking On The Door (Foose-The Partys On Fire), & Highclere (Foose-Handgun Creek).

He Is The Risingstar ran true to his name in capturing the first stakes race of his career, tak- ing top prize in the $20,000 Paul B. Ford Memorial
Handicap at Los Alamitos on Dec. 11.
Ridden by Jose Alvarez, He Is The Risingstar
didn’t have the best break, veering in after the start. He rallied strongly in the lane, however, closing from fourth position and catching Political Chick
in the late stages en route to a neck victory as the race favorite. Earning a speed index of 105, the win- ner clocked 550 yards in :27.340 for owner Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches LP and trainer Paul Jones and increased his earnings to $68,807. In addition to this stakes score, He Is The Risingstar finished sixth in the Los Alamitos Super Derby on Oct. 31 after finishing second in his trial heat.
Bred in Texas by Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC, He Is The Risingstar is out of the multiple stakes-placed mare Meddlin Mischief. Runner-up in the 1996 Wine Country Derby and third in that year’s Solano Derby, as a broodmare she is the dam of 15 winners from 22 starters. In addition to He
Is The Risingstar, she has produced two additional stakes winners, including Grade 1 winner Diamond Tres Seis and 2-time stakes winner Chief Shazoom.
Political Chick (Apollitical Jess-Fearless Chick) dueled for the early lead and proved second best under Cesar DeAlba for owner Jon Lane Henderson and trainer Justin Clark.
First Down Tiny Man (Tinys First Corona- High And Loose TB) and Cody Jensen showed the way early and held third for owner Colten O’Dell. Christopher O’Dell saddled the sorrel gelding. Pappas in the Pen (Pappasito-Pen In Hand), Blabber (Kiddy Up-Thinking Out Loud), Zoomin For Kash (Winners Version-A Crimson Zoom) & SMS Boogie Nanue (Brookstone Bay-Catch You Later) completed the field.

Going into the Dec. 4 Lake Forest Handicap, Sugardaddy B may not have won for more than two years, but he had the kind of class that
made him dangerous. He proved it with his victory in the Los Alamitos stakes.
As a 3 year old, Sugardaddy B finished third
in the Ruidoso Derby-G1 and won the Manuel Lujan Stakes, the latter at Albuquerque. Guillermo Morales took over his training when owners Conception Gutierrez, Erasmo Hernandez and Manuel Torrez shipped him to Los Alamitos. The gelding has since run consistently, almost always getting part of the purse.
In the 300-yard Lake Forest, jockey Rodolfo Arvizu broke Sugardaddy B out of the gate sharply. In just a couple of strides, they had the lead,
and Sugardaddy B flew home on top to win by 1/2-length in :15.471.
Bielau Oaks bred Sugardaddy B in Texas from LS Honey Brown, winner of the 1999 Kansas Jackpot Prep Futurity. The mare has produced nine starters in seven winners, including stakes-placed Runnin Ramped and Mooncielago B. The third dam, stakes-winning Choo Choo Boom, has pro- duced three stakes winners.
Dr Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Eye For Corona) finished second for jockey Jesus Ayala, trainer Yanet Rodriguez, and owner EG High Desert Farms. The 3-year-old gelding was coming off an allowance victory.
Stanley Watkins’ Jiffy James (Jesse James Jr-Ms Klee), ridden by Gary Boag, ran third. Charles Treece trains the 4-year-old gelding, whose last vic- tory came in allowance company in April.
Completing the field were A Corona Habit (Corona Czech-Playful Habits), Joe Legacy (Brookstone Bay-A Diamond Legacy), Koolist (Separatist-Im Willie Kool), and Scuba Doo (First Down Dash-Special Wave).
