National Day of the Charro Championship
GULF COAST STREAKER
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With eight contenders, this race was held in honor of Charrería, the national equestrian sport of Mexico. With a purse of $352,400 pesos ($19,152 US approximately), this 350-yard classic is the second of the season for the speedy runners.
The filly Azoomin Jamie and the colt Gulf Coast Streaker were the favorites of the public in the betting windows.
At the start of the race, the filly PYC At The Mtn V pulled out and made Azoomin Jamie uncomfortable, following her trajec- tory towards the outer rail of the track. In her advance, she moved inward, but the expertise of Moisés González García avoided contact with Queens. Gulf Coast Streaker took advantage of the turnaround of his main rival to drive without any pressure towards the goal, occupying the inside of the sandy track.
The effort paid off when Gulf Coast Streaker and José Manuel Cisneros stayed ahead of the whole group, managing to cross
the finish line 1/2-length in front.
Gulf Coast Streaker (Rock Solid Jess-Ladys
Streaker) finished the distance in :17.29 for a 96 speed index, bringing to
his record to four wins from
12 starts. In 2017, he won the
John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge, the Jodys Glory and the Mexican Futurity. Now in his first appearance in 2018, he boosts his total lifetime earnings above one million pesos for owner Cuadra Díaz de León and trainer Epifanio Carrasco Sandoval.
Azoomin Jamie (Ivory
James-Azoomin With Jessie)
and Moisés González García
finished second. In 2017, she won the Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará, The Prize Classic and the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic, as well as a second
place in the John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge and the Juvenile Championship. This earned her the title of Champion Two-
Year-Old Filly.
The only Mexican bred
contender, SF Shoots Flyer (Frankie Shoots-Three Way Flyer), came in third place ridden by Martín Hernández Bautista for owner Cuadra Villagrán and trainer José Ravel Baltazar Aguilar.
Queens (Corona Cartel-A Tiny Bit More), Hunki Dori (One Dashing Eagle-Fancys First Affair), Teller Hesa Corona (Teller Cartel-Eyes Tricky Too), Classy Classic (Foose-Royal Classic Way),
PYC U At The Mtn V (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Silk Mountain) completed the order of finish.
