Portland Meadows 2017 Meet Ends
Portland Meadows ended their 2017 meet on Jan. 30. Hector Magallanes was named leading Quarter Horse trainer with 22 wins, and Eduardo Sosa took the leading Quarter Horse jockey title with 15 victories.
EHV-1 Positive Forces Quarantine At Los Alamitos
A pony horse housed at Los Alamitos tested positive for EHV-1, causing a barn at the
track to go through quarantine procedures. California Horse Racing Board equine medical director Rick Arthur confirmed the case. At time of press there have not been any other confirmed cases.
Speedhorse Sponsors Heart Hop For Charity
Speedhorse, in conjunction with Future Fortunes Inc., sponsored the Heart Hop For Charity at the Lance Graves International Barrel Racing Championship held at the Lazy E Arena on Feb. 16 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Pony Hop consisted of three trials of five riders each. The trial winners that moved on to the finals were Craig Brooks of Brooks Barrel Horses, Lee Hansen of Lee Hansen Barrel Horses, and Emily Necaise from Team Talmadge, who won the final hop. Barrel race fans and contestants purchased tickets
to “wager” on their favorite rider, and all proceeds were dedicated to the Future Fortunes Foundation, which offers The Barrel Racers Relief Fund and College Scholarship Program.
University of Florida Racing Laboratory Becomes 10th To Receive RMTC Accreditation
The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) board granted
Interim Accreditation to the University
of Florida Racing Laboratory (UFRL) at
its Feb. 13 meeting at Gulfstream Park
in Hallandale Beach, FL. The labora-
tory is poised to become the 10th racing testing laboratory to receive full RMTC Laboratory Accreditation. UFRL performs testing of Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and Standardbred samples for the Florida Division of Pari-mutuel wagering. RMTC Accredited Laboratories are required to participate in multiple rounds of quality assurance program testing prior to accredita- tion and each year after accreditation. The quality assurance program acts as a check
on the laboratories to ensure they are able to detect and quantify substances of concern in horse racing.
K.C. Carden Passes Away

“K.C.” Carden, 50, of
Sheridan, Wyoming,
passed away on Feb.
13 after a courageous
battle with cancer.
K.C. grew up in
Dallas, Texas, was
a high school track
and field star, was an
alternate to the 1600 meter relay team in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and earned
a track scholarship to Oklahoma State University where he graduated with a degree in education. After coaching for a year, he
began training horses in 1991, saddling 515 winners with over $4.6 million in earners over the years. Carden is one of the Bank of America Racing Challenge program’s all- time leading trainers, winning the leading trainer award in 2004 and 2008-09, and the leading owner award in 2006-07. Among the top horses he trained are 3-time Champion Kool Kue Baby and 2-time Champion Toast To Dash. Carden was also an owner, with
44 winners and over $800,000 in earnings including his top earner/multiple stakes win- ner Brindis Por Cayenne. K.C. is survived by his wife, Candice, daughter, Kamryn, and many other family members and friends.
Maknmoves Dies
Multiple stakes sire Maknmoves (First Down Dash-Militia, Pie In The Sky) passed away at the age of 19 on Dec. 31. Bred by Blane Schvaneveldt, the 1998 sorrel stallion won or placed in eight of 18 career starts for owners Jay and Polly Parsons. Maknmoves won the Corona Chick Handicap at two, finished second in the Cypress Sophomore Handicap, and third in
the Jet Deck Handicap and QHBC Juvenile Classic. He is the sire of 157 winners and 54 stakes horses with earnings of $2.8 million. Among his top performers are Hoist Mission, Bannister and Natalias Got Moves. Frozen semen will be available through Ron and Laurie Moosman of RM Stables.
