  John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge
MAGGIE MOONPIE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio • Translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Whenever there is a Quarter Horse classic at the Hipodromo de las Americas, the atmo- sphere is modified significantly. Adrenaline is on the rise as the race nears its time. August 19 was no exception, as 10 2-year olds returned to the site where, three weeks before, their
trial performance made them worthy to compete for a prize of 387,172 pesos ($28,675 U.S.) in the John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge at 350 yards.
While the runners were warming up, fans studied their handicapping bets,
in which the odds finally bowed for Swingin Corona, Runaway Kisser and Alizee.
The brown filly
Jewelsstrongesthope started
from gate 10 and moved for-
ward freely. However, some of the field encoun- tered trouble, as, tragically, Alizee, from the seven gate, broke down and fell to the ground along with her rider, Juan Carlos Guerrero.
Thus the race was left open for the bay Maggie Moonpie, of Racing Block Las Heveas, to win with Eduardo Valenzuela as her rider. This duo also took credit for the Jodys Glory Classic, held on July 8.
Maggie Moonpie made the journey on a fast track in :17.40 for a speed index of 91. Halfway through the distance she recov- ered from a slow start to take command
until the end. It was her sixth career victory and earns her the right to wear the flag of Mexico in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2. Maggie Moonpie is trained by Victor Manuel Diaz Gonzalez.
Second place went to Jewelsstrongesthope (Strong Hope-Raspeberry Jewel), owned by Villa Ana Maria and ridden by Joseph Edgar
Dominguez. She was trained by Simon Martin Hernandez.
Boketeer (Boknaai-Royal Spring Fling) finished third for the Racing Block Santa Ana. The trainer was Marco Antonio Luna and the
rider was Alejandro Almazan. The remaining order of finish was Swingin Corona
(Swingin Jess-Coronita Cartel), Conquests (FDD Dynasty- Itsmybag), Famous Treasure (Azoom-Ought To Be Famous), Chic A Run (FDD Dynasty-A Smokie Chick), Runaway Kisser (Ocean Runaway-One Fast Kisser) and JA Gols Dundee (Gol-JA Sofisticated Lady). Alizee (Azoom-Pretty Girl Perry) did not finish.
– A Smokie Chick); Runaway Kisser (Ocean Runaway – One Fast Kisser); Ja Gols Dundee (Gol – Ja Sofisticated Lady) y Alizee (Azoom – Pretty Girl Perry).
