New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2
CHICKALONI
by Michael Cusortelli
Third-fastest qualifier from the Oct. 17 trials, Chickaloni, won her heat by 1/2-length under Jose Ortiz. The two-year-old sorrel filly races for brothers David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins of Orangeville, Utah. Chickaloni earned her first stakes victory in the 400-yard $280,820 New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2 finals at Zia Park on Nov. 1.
Ridden once again by Ortiz for trainer Lori Chavez, Chickaloni made her trip in :19.758 and earned an 87 speed index against a 5-mph head wind. Her margin of victory was a neck over second-fastest qualifier Frank N Jesse. Chickaloni banked the $134,794 winner’s share to push her total earnings to $219,173 from eight outs.
The Hinkins brothers have been racing horses for about 40 years. Their most suc- cessful runner, First Down Illusion, won the 2010 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 at Los Alamitos. First Down Illusion is one of three stallions they currently stand at Shawn and Lindy Edwards’ Sky Stone Ranch at Aztec, New Mexico; the others are graded stakes win- ner Rex Hill and Sompin About First.
“We also have about a dozen broodmares at Sky Stone,” David Hinkins said. “We’ve raced
a few horses in Utah, but
not as many as here in New Mexico. We have breed-
ers’ awards, and there is no incentive to race in Utah. We have three stallions standing here now, so we’re sold on the New Mexico breeders’ program.”
Chickaloni was bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez of La Union, New Mexico. The filly became the first stakes winner sired by Jess A Chicks. Chickaloni is also the first winner from two starters foaled by unraced Machi Moon. The filly’s second dam, stakes-placed Nagano Moon, is the dam of five stakes winners, including 2009 Champion Aged Stallion First Moonflash and Grade 2 winner Dash Ta Moon.
The Hinkins brothers purchased Chickaloni for $7,500 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The filly has now won four races. Her resume includes a second-place finish in the $214,768 Downs at Albuquerque Futurity on Sept. 26, and a third- place run in the $229,860 New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2 at Sunland Park on April 5.
“We thought $7,500 was a good price for such a nice filly,” said Hinkins. “We have a
half sister to this filly by Sixes Royal, and she showed prom- ise but cracked her hock and never had a chance to show what she could do. We’re going to be getting some babies out of her next year.”
Runner-up Frank N Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Famous Poet) is a sorrel gelding racing for Renee Carter and Jaye Huseman. Frank N Jesse was ridden by Bonifacio Perez for trainer Greg Green.
Blazin Moon Force (First Moonflash- Blazin Force) finished third for owners David G. Valdez and Luis Rogelio Nava. The sorrel gelding was prepped by Jose F. Ramirez Sr., who gave a leg up to jockey Manuel Gutierrez.
Teana Fay (Winners Version-Thirty Fourth Street) ran fourth and was followed by Silvers Moon Flash (First Moonflash-Silver Impulse), First Quick Flash (First Moonflash- Quickkey), fastest qualifier Jess Cruzin On By (Jesse James Jr-Woodbridge Duchess), Ms Blu Moon (First Moonflash-Chickie Blu), and Flash Theory (First Moonflash-Ms Perry Mason). Eighth-fastest qualifier Major Bites was scratched.
