                                 Sam Houston Race Park Chairman Hurwitz Killed in Boating Accident
Shawn Hurwitz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sam Houston Race Park, was killed Oct. 11 after a boat he was in collided with a barge in Lake Austin. Hurwitz was pro- nounced dead at the scene while another victim later died at the hospital. Travis County EMS said the other three sustained non-life-threat- ening injuries. Hurwitz was also President
and CEO of Maxxam, a real estate investment company, a principal financial backer for KIPP charter schools, and the son of Houston bil- lionaire Charles Hurwitz.
Sherman Joe Hadley Passes Away
Sherman Hadley, a prominent horseman in the Intermountain region, died at the age of 53 on Oct. 8 in Utah. Hadley had been confined to wheelchair with limited communicative skills after 3 large bales of hay fell on him in his barn in 2008. Among his many successful horses was graded stakes winner Legendary Dreamer. Hadley is survived by wife Susan; sons, Jordan Joe and Garrett James, who plan to continue their father’s legacy at the race- track; and many other family members and friends.
Bill Weger Passes Away
Breeder/trainer Bill Ray Weger, 77, passed away Oct. 4 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Weger graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in educa- tion. He was the breeder of 43 starters with earnings of nearly $500,000, and the trainer of 887 winners with earnings of more than $2.7 million, including Texas Classic Derby-G1 winner Jakes Jockmo. Weger is survived by 2 children, six grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.

of 81. Hogoboom,
who founded Albert
Hogoboom Oil
Field Trucking, was
a 20 year breeder
of Quarter Horses. He and his wife Shirley bred the earners of nearly $900,000, including multiple stakes winners. Albert contributed
to the El Dorado community in a number of ways. He served on the board of directors at Susan B. Allen Hospital; was instrumental in helping Butler Community College construct their new stadium; and supported the Kansas Oil Museum, USD 490 Partner in Education, Butler Community College, and many other organizations. Hogoboom is survived by his wife, a daughter, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.
Major Rime Dies
Major Rime si 104 (Rime-Mary Major, Easy Toro) died at the age of 23 on Oct. 23. Bred by Robert Driggers, the 1992 sorrel stallion won 7 stakes events and retired with $278,986 banked. Major Rime, who was owned by Mike Abraham, sired 323 starters that earned more than $6.4 million, including his top earner Rime Has A Chick ($271,222).

SLM Big Daddy Dies
Two-time World Champion SLM Big Daddy (Daddy Hold On-Winds Of Victory, The Bulldogger) was laid to rest in Early, Texas, on Aug. 29 at the age of 23 after a 3-day illness. The gelding, who was bred and raced by Lindsey Pruitt and her late husband Steve Mitchell, earned $1,013,550 winning 24 of his 49 starts from 1994 through 1999. SLM Big Daddy won 14 stakes events, including the 1997 & 1998 Champion of Champions-G1, the 1997 AQHA Challenge Championship-G1, the 1997 Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, and the 1998 Remington Park Gold Cup-G1.
This Flights For You Dies
This Flights For You si 110 (First To Flash- Atomic Fireball, Runaway Winner) died in his stall in Sallisaw, Oklahoma on Sept. 2 at the age of 10. The 5-time stakes winner and 3-time New Track Record setter received his AQHA Superior Race Horse title in 2009 and was
the 2009 Oklahoma Hi-Point Aged Stallion. This Flights For You is a stakes sire from very limited starters from 3 crops to race.
