The 2018 Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame inductee ceremony was held to recognize outstanding individuals, horses, ranches
or businesses whose contributions impact
the American Quarter Horse in the state of Oklahoma’s equine industry. The inductees are individuals Luke Castle, Constance L. “Connie” Golden, Jessie Powell, Calvin R. White DVM; and horses Johnny Boone, Lena’s Bar TB, Miss Olene, Spanish Array; and business Ada Horse Sales. Silver Spur Western Lodge is the recipient of the Bud Breeding Oklahoma Spirit Award.
February 16
Speedhorse, in conjunction with Future Fortunes Inc., sponsored the Heart Hop For Charity at the Lance Graves International Barrel Racing Championship held at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Pony Hop consisted of three trials of five riders each. The trial winners that moved on to the finals were Craig Brooks of Brooks Barrel Horses, Lee Hansen of Lee Hansen Barrel Horses, and Emily Necaise from Team Talmadge, who won the final hop. Barrel race fans and contestants purchased tickets to “wager” on their favorite rider, and all proceeds were dedicated to the Future Fortunes Foundation, which offers The Barrel Racers Relief Fund and College Scholarship Program.

The American Horse Council (AHC) Foundation has released the results of its 2017 Economic Impact Stud of the U.S. Horse Industry. The study showed the equine industry in the U.S.: generates approximately $122
billion in total economic impact; provides a
total employment impact of $1.74 million; and generates $79 billion in total salaries, wages
and benefits. The study also revealed that approximately 80 million acres of land is reserved for horse-related activities. The current number of horses in the United States stands at 7.2 million.

Quarter Horse breeder/owner Bob Rosenthal, 82, passed away after a battle with cancer. Rosenthal became a fan of horse racing at an early age. He married his wife, Connie, in
1955 and together they campaigned many Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse race horses, including 2016 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 winner Fire At Will, their first Grade 1 winner.

Longtime horsemen Kevin Renard “K.C.” Carden, 50, of Sheridan, Wyoming, passed away after a battle with cancer. K.C. grew up in Dallas, Texas, was a high school track and field star, was an alternate to the 1600-meter relay team in the 1984 Olympics
in Los Angeles, and earned a track scholarship to Oklahoma State University where he graduated with a degree in education. He began training horses in 1991, saddled 515 winners with over $4.6 million
in earners, and is one of the Bank of America Racing Challenge program’s all-time leading trainers. Among the top horses he trained are 3-time Champion Kool Kue Baby and 2-time Champion Toast To Dash. Carden was also an owner,
with 44 winners and over
$800,000 in
earnings including
his top earner/
multiple stakes
winner Brindis Por
Cayenne.
