Owned by Johnny Trotter and Burnett Ranches, One Famous Eagle’s 2013 book at 6666 Ranch filled quickly as his freshman season exploded. He is joined at stud this year by One Dashing Eagle, who will stand at Lazy E Ranch for owners Jose and Gustavo De La Torre and San Gregorio Racing Stable.
THE 2013 CONTENDERS
The list of sires who will watch their first
foals race in 2013 is a long one, headed by some noteworthy names. There are four Champions on the list: First Moonflash, 2009 Champion Aged Stallion; Foose, 2008 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt; Inseperable, 2009 Champion 3-Year-Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Colt; and Tempting Dash, 2009 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt.
One of the most closely-watched freshman sires of 2013 will be Tempting Dash, whose name has been surrounded by controversy –
first from rumors of an equine piroplasmosis infection, and later from the federal arrest of his owner, Jose Trevino Morales. But there can be no denying the stallion’s authority on the racetrack. Undefeated in four starts, Tempting Dash set two New Track Records and simply blew away his competition, often by daylight, in his short racing career. The numbers are not in his favor to become the leading freshman sire in 2013, with only six registered foals of 2011, but no doubt
there will be considerable attention focused on the ones that do make it to the track this year. Tempting Dash’s real influence could come when his first full crop hits the track in 2014.
Becoming the leading freshman sire can
be a numbers game – One Famous Eagle had 101 registered foals in his freshman crop – and Foose and First Moonflash both have the statistics to excel, with each of them having foal numbers approaching 100 in their first crop. Expect many of Foose’s foals to debut at Los Alamitos Race Course, the site of the stallion’s biggest wins. An earner of $1.6 million, Foose won the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1, and the Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes-G3. First Moonflash’s biggest wins happened in New Mexico, and you can expect to see a majority of his first foals racing for the rich Mew Mexico-bred purses offered in that state.
A few states away in Oklahoma, Inseperable’s foals will likely be chasing Oklahoma-Bred money at Remington Park and throughout the Sooner State. The winner of the All American Derby-G1 and the Rainbow Derby-G1, Inseperable should be well-represented with a good number of well-bred foals in 2013.
Other stallions with good numbers in their first crop include Hard Hitting, Jess Zoomin and Winners Version, all with more than 40 regis- tered foals of 2011. While numbers are important in a freshman sire’s career, a good showing by
a smaller number of foals can signal a stallion whose sire career may take off in later years,
or may remain solid and consistent, year after year. Sir Runaway Dash, for example, was the

seventh-leading freshman sire by money earnings in 2012 with only nine starters for the year.
The industry’s leading pedigrees continue to flourish, as nearly one-third of the 35 freshman sires of 2013 are sired by the three “legends” – First Down Dash, Corona Cartel and Mr Jess Perry. Top 10 all-time broodmare sires Dash For Cash, *Beduino TB, Chicks Beduino, Runaway Winner, First Down Dash and Streakin Six remain popular on the dam’s side of this year’s freshman sires.
Two-year-olds made their official debut
on Feb. 25 at Louisiana Downs in the trials to
the $281,796 Mardi Gras Futurity-RG2 for Louisiana-Breds. A record number of horses entered the trials, with the 10-fastest qualifiers returning for the March 16 finals. Of those 10 qualifiers, freshman sire Fast Prize Dash qualified Wow What A Prize with the third fastest time. The first major non-state bred race of the year
for 2-year-olds is the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3, with trials on March 2.
