NMHBA Stakes-RG2
SANDYS JESSE
by John Moorehouse
Underdog Sandys Jesse scored a huge victory on Feb. 17 at Sunland Park. A 17-1 longshot, the three-year-old filly picked up a surprising
victory in the $85,000 NMHBA Stakes-RG2, collecting her first-ever win in stakes company and just her fourth in nine career outs. Sandys Jesse previously was stakes-placed, finish-
ing third in last year’s running of the New Mexico State Fair Senorita
Futurity-RG3 at Albuquerque.
She won the NMHBA in rather decisive fashion, enjoy- ing a solid break from the No. 9 gate and charging into the lead to gain a 1/2-length separation by the first call. Sandys Jesse maintained that advantage at every subse- quent call to bring home the $51,000 winner’s share for owner Chin Lee.
Sandys Jesse, whose life- time earnings improved to
$97,615, also paid handsomely for those who wagered on her - producing a $37.40 payoff on a $2 win ticket. Sandys Jesse is trained by Alonso Orozco. Jockey Tanner Thedford was aboard for the stakes-winning trip, which saw the filly cover the 400 yards in :19.267 and register an 89 speed index, statistics that were aided by a brisk 12 mph tailwind.
This marked the first win of Sandy Jesse’s sophomore campaign. The filly went 3-0-2 as a two-year-old and com- peted in two futurities, both of which were graded stakes races.
MJ Farms bred Sandys Jesse and owns her dam,
1995 mare Sandys Fame. The Dash Ta Fame mare is also stakes-placed, taking second in the 1997 Diamond Classic Futurity-RG1. Three of her six starters hold black type, but Sandys Jesse becomes the first
member of the brood to win a stakes event. Sandys Fame has foaled 13 total offspring.
One Blazin Kimbo (Chicks A Blazin- Kimbo With Class) out-nodded Es Dove to secure second. The pre-race favorite, One Blazin Kimbo is owned by Crowson Racing, trained by Victor Rodriguez-Flores, and was ridden by Esgar Ramirez. Es Dove, who also was sired by Jesse James Jr, is owned by Shirley Burelsmith. The Emmitt Burelsmith Jr. trainee had Larry Gamez in the irons.
Following were Rex Hill (Jesse James Jr-Tangled Vines), Dashes Best (Dash Ta Fame- Rammers Best TB), Runin Sixes (Sixes Royal- Perfect Sevens), Slew By You (Dash Ta Fame-Slew A Po TB), The Four Js (Get Down Perry-Invisible Streaker) and Posies Desiria (Desirio-Posies). An Absolut Diamond, CB Special Version and Jess Rueben James scratched.

Hialeah Invitational Championship
MR COMANDO
by Michael Compton
The $75,000 Hialeah Invitational Championship attracted a star-studded cast of 10 runners to close out the 2012-2013 stakes action at Hialeah Park. When the dust settled, Juan Cano’s Mr Comando posted the 23-1 upset under jockey Agustin Silva.
Away cleanly from post position No. 3, Mr Comando dueled for command early and edged clear late to post the half-length surprise. He cov- ered the 440 yards in :21.518
and earned a speed index of 96.
Second in the Signature Stakes at Hialeah earlier in the meeting, Mr Comando prevailed over a highly- accomplished field which included multiple stakes winners BPS Jumpin Frisco, Joltin Jess, Feature My News, Freaking and defending champion Jess a Runner.
Mr Comando, who was bred by in California by
Porfirio Carrasco, returned $48.20 to his backers at the mutuel windows. Despite the 5-year-old gelding’s long odds, the victory came as little surprise to trainer Felix Barraza.
“I knew he could compete with these,” said Barraza, who trains six horses for Cano. “He has proven he is competitive with stakes horses. I had a lot of confidence he would run well here. He’s a very good horse and he was fresh for the race.”
Mr Comando is twice stakes-placed, having also fin- ished second in the Fairmount Park Invitational in 2012. He is out of the White Tie mare Unloved, a winner in eight
of 29 career starts during
her racing days. Unloved has also produced stakes winner Hawkins Lane, a track record setter at Sacramento in 2009.
The runners behind Mr Comando hit the finish tightly bunched.
Sstrickortreat (Zoomin for Bux-Treat Her Likea Lady) was second under Francisco Ramirez Jr. for owner Rancho Los Dos Potrillos LLC and trainer Brandon Muniz. Glen Graff’s Joltin Jess finished third but was DQd to 9th for bothering foes in the lane. Freaking (TR Dasher-Chickasis) was moved to third. Ridden by Alejandro Luna, Freaking pressed the early pace before fading slightly in the final yards. The 7-year-old gelding is owned and trained by Ricardo Martinez.
BPS Bumpin Frisco (Jumpn-Frisco Fling), race favorite Honor Me Good (Honors-Miss Casady Lady), Feature My News (Feature Mr Jess-Goodnews Montanna), Arbeka Raincloud (Voghts Gold-Arbeka Bee Quick), Jess a Runner (Jess Louisiana Blue-Katiebug Driver) and Nowurtalking (Heza Fast Dash-Illusive Star-TB) completed the order of finish.
