   Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge
HESA WINNER
by Michael Compton
Hesa Winner ran to his name in the $20,850 Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge on Feb. 17 at Hialeah Park. The easiest of victors, Hesa Winner
jumped out to the lead after the break and drew clear through the lane to win by a measured length under an armchair ride from Gerardo Garrido.
The even-money favorite covered 300 yards in :15.289 and was given a speed index of 98 for the impressive effort. Hesa Winner, bred in Texas by Jerry Windham, is owned by Eduardo and Christine Morales and is trained by Eduardo. The Roble Rojo Bonus Challenge was Hesa Winner’s first start with Eduardo as trainer.
“We expected an effort like this,” said Christine. “He was training strongly coming into the race and he ran lights out.”
Second in the Beautiful Prairie Stakes at Hialeah on Jan. 20 in his first start this season, Hesa Winner is produced from the stakes-placed mare Apollos Winner, who finished second in the 2003 Texas Juvenile Challenge at Retama. Apollos Winner is also the dam of Dewey Cox, winner of the 2012 Hawthorne Futurity at Sandy Downs.
In second was Speed Smith (Prime Talent-Speedy Empress) under Manuel Gutierrez for owner Cesar Rosales and trainer Rolando Almanza. In third was Gold Rrrush (Corona Cartel-Jess a Lil Bit More) under Oscar Rincon for owner Rancho Los Dos Potrillos LLC and trainer Brandon Muniz.
Reporting home behind the top three were Jazzy Sixes (Sixes Royal-Runaway Kate), Rebas a Rockin (Dashin Bye-Let Me Rock You), Waving at the Chicks (Wave Carver-Bay Or Gray Chick), Sixes Quick Jolla (Streakin La Jolla-Sixes Quick) and Jess On a High (Fly Jess Fly-High On Piaget). Logans Dash (Toast to Dash-Logans Game) and Shanachee (Country Chicks Man-Court Etiquette) were scratched by the stewards.
South Florida Invitational
I SEE VISIONS
by Michael Compton
Donald Ming’s Florida homebred I See Visions is appropriately named. The 3-year-old colt’s trainer Grover Wheeler, Jr. didn’t go so far as to say he has
visions, but he did have a dream about I See Visions winning the $20,000 South Florida Invitational at Hialeah Park on Feb. 16 a few days before the race.
I See Visions and jockey Troy Crissup saw the dream through to fruition in the 440-yard fixture, leading virtually start to finish winning by 1/2-length to stop the timer in :21.818 for a speed index of 89. The $12,000 winner’s share takes his earnings to $39,000.
“We were expecting a big run from him,” said Wheeler. “He came over real good, was well-behaved saddling, and he got away from there clean.”
I See Visions received his name after his dam, Vision Of Dash, not from Wheeler’s dream.
“Mr. Wheeler dreamed we were going to win this race,” said Beccie Ming, Donald’s wife. “He was right. We owe a lot to Mr. Wheeler and Van Haywood in Louisiana for this success.”
A brilliant producer, Vision of Dash is also the dam of graded stakes winners Real Visions, War Visions, stakes winner Special Visions and stakes-placed Six Visions. Her progeny have banked more than $700,000. “She’s been such a special mare for us,” said Beccie.
Snow Quick (Wave Carver-Shez Snow Quick) and Shanley Jackson were second for owner Dan Frazier and trainer Matt Frazier. Stormy Cartel was third under Manuel Gutierrez for trainer Ricardo Martinez and owner Alejandro Medina.
Followed by Moonlight Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Streakin Moonlight), Tampico (FDD Dynasty- Cartel Dash), DH-Ms Southern Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Southern Price), DH-Scream N Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Linda Te Chick), Droppin Timber (First Timber-Droppindead Gorgeous), Texelkas Chic (Jumpin Chic-Texelkas Shocker), and Fast N Furious B (First n Kool-Hollywood a List).
