                                  H.C. ‘Bubba’ Werner Passes Away
H.C. ‘Bubba’ Werner passed away on April 17 following a long battle with cancer. Werner, who graduated from the University of Texas, grew up around his father’s racetrack. He became a trainer, conditioning Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Among his top trainees was 4-time Champion/17-time winner Come Six. Werner took the gelding to Mexico in 1974 for a match race with Beduino TB, who won the event by 1-length. Werner is the trainer of over $2.1 million in Quarter Horse earners. He is survived by son Ronnie, daughter Staci, along with many other family members and friends.
Champion Sire Volcom Dies
Volcom (First Down Dash-Runaway Vike, Runaway Winner) was euthanized on April 30 due to complications of laminitis. Owned by P.K. Thomas, the 16-year-old stallion earned $430,433 and won 11 of 23 starts, including the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G1, Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G1 and Los Alamitos Prep Handicap. After his career on the track, Volcom went on to sire the earners of $4.84 mil- lion and 25 stakes horses, including Champion Volcom Bay and High Money Earning Horse JM Miracle. Lazy E Ranch manager Butch Wise said, “Lazy E Ranch felt very fortunate to have had the opportunity to stand this outstanding stallion for P.K. during his stallion career.”

  A Delightful Legacy Dies
Leading broodmare A Delightful Legacy (First Down Dash-Fortune Of Delight, Six Fortunes) died at the age of 18 on March 16. Bred and owned by Gwendolyn Eaves, the 2001 bay mare won 4 of 6 starts and earned $179,153, including winning the 2003 All American Juvenile Invitational-G3 and finish- ing fourth in that year’s Los Alamitos Million Futurity-G1. As a broodmare, A Delightful Legacy produced 32 foals, 26 starters, 18 win- ners/ROM and 6 blacktype winners, includ- ing 2-time Champion Inseperable and Grade 3 winners/first crop sire Separate Interest. A Delightful Legacy was buried near a pond on James Ranch near Wayne, Oklahoma.
