The photo on page 175 shows successful Quarter Horse jockey Luke Myles at a roping event. Born in 1951, Myles won 302 Quarter Horse races and 43 stakes events, including 1975 Shue Fly Handicap, 1982 Marathon Handicap, and 1985 Anne Burnett Handicap. He was a leading rider at Los Alamitos from the 1970’s through the 1990’s.
Myles was one of the top riders during an era of excellent jockeys. He was highly respected by his peers for his professionalism and ability, and was known as quiet and unassuming. In an interview for AQHA, fellow jockey James Dreyer said, “A trainer would lose a great jockey for his horse, but the trainer could walk into the room and find 10 jockeys that were as good or better as the rider being replaced. Luke was among the top riders during that time. He wasn’t much of a talker. He just went about his business the right way.”
During his career on the track, Myles rode horses such as World Champion Mr Jet Moore, 4-time Champion Come Six and Champion Special Phoebe. Myles was a fixture in the Cham- pion of Champions, but perhaps his most famous contest came in an historic match race in 1974 at the Hipódromo de las Américas in Mexico, when he took on the Thoroughbred Bedu- ino aboard Come Six. The race was held in front of an estimated 50,000 fans and, although Beduino won, Come Six posted a personal best for 440 yards.
Myles passed away on Nov. 11, 2018, at the age of 67. A special Moment of Silence was held at Los Alamitos to remember the jockey whose mounts earned over $4.7 million.
