by Danny Camp
Imperial Eagle raced for yet another stakes victory in the 440-yard Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 at Zia Park on Dec.4.
Esgar Ramirez sat chilly as they stepped away from the 5-post. The gelding surged from third place in the stretch to hit the wire 1-length in front, stopping the clock in :21.678 to earn a 94 speed index.
With the first place check worth $93,120, Imperial Eagle now has a total bankroll worth $1,641,507. The gelding has won 5 of 8 outs, including the 2016 All American Futurity-G1 for owner Charles E. Robinson and trainer Tony Sedillo. Imperial Eagle also finished 2nd in the West Texas Futurity-21
“If he has room to run, he will hit another gear after the first hundred yards,”
Zia Park Championship-G1
Tony Sedillo said. “The Southwest Juvenile Championship was a real test. I was thankful that Imperial Eagle had a place to run, that’s all he needs. Esgar had to ride hard to keep him running through that hole.
“He pulled up really good, cleaned up his feed and there is not a sore spot on him,” the trainer continued. “He’s an easy horse to train,
easy to gallop.”
When asked about the
future, Tony offered, “We are looking at the Championship at Sunland, then we will let him rest until the spring.”
“He’s a super horse and a great ride, all the credit goes to the horse,” jockey Esgar Ramirez said.
Imperial Eagle was bred by Fredda Draper & is the top earner & 1st stakes winner out of 5-time stakes winner/ NM Hi-Point Aged Mare
Jenuine Joy, who has produced 100% money earners from 4 starters, including graded stakes placed winner Political Mess.
Magnifico Dragon (Zulu Dragon-Cassies Mag) was 2nd under Mauro Salcedo for owner Daniel Baldarrama & trainer Cynthia Gonzalez. Apollitical Scout (Apollitical Jess-Swingin Cartel) was 3rd under Omar Reyes for owners Preston & Karen Cloud and trainer Clinton Crawford. JESSIES FIRST DOWN
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Judd Kearl initially thought that Jessies First Down would need a perfect trip to defeat a good horse like Zoomin Effortlessly in the Nov. 23 Zia Park Championship-G1. Although Jessies First Down didn’t get a per- fect trip, it was a near perfect race and he won despite encountering some trouble.
Jessies First Down came away well from post four under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo. But then TF Im That Guy veered
in towards him, and “he
got banged around pretty
good,” said Kearl. Jessies
First Down managed to grab
the lead, and while Zoomin
Effortlessly tried to catch
him, Jessies First Down held
off the 3-10 favorite to win
by a head in :21.722 for the
440 yards.
“About 100 yards away, he broke loose and just ran a super race,” said Kearl. “He’s
quiet and doesn’t get excited. A kid could hold him in the paddock until you put the jock on him.”
Kearl trains Jessies First Down for owner/ breeder Ted Abrams. The gelding had won four earlier stakes, including the 2016 Refrigerator Handicap-G1 and Sam Houston Classic Handicap-G2. “As a two year old, he had a hard time getting away from the gate,” said
Kearl. “He broke his maiden in the Hialeah Maturity. He’s anybody’s dream now.”
Abrams bred Jessies First Down in Texas from his homebred 2-time winner
Jess A Classy Lassy. He also raced the second dam, Grade 1-placed Mighty Classy Lassy. Jess A Classy Lassy has pro- duced 100% money earners/ winners from five starters.
Zoomin Effortlessly (Zoomin For Bux-Royal
Quick Affair) had finished first in 10 races
in a row, with one disqualification, prior
to his second-place finish in the Zia Park Championship. Santos Carrizales rode the 5-year-old gelding for trainer Edelmiro Carrizales and owner Telesforo Perrett. Alis Jumpn (Jumpn-Gloria In Red) ran third
for jockey Jose Enriquez, trainer Adam
Tapia, and owner Eloy Humberto Pena. The 6-year-old mare was coming off a second in the Lovington Stakes-G2, also at Zia Park. Completing the field were Fly Thru The
Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Babe On The Fly), Apollitical Ok (Apollitical Jess-Taka Puna), TF Im That Guy (First Down Dash-TF Ms Special Perry), and Memphis D Nasty (FDD Dynasty-Jess A Cartel). GRC Justplainazoom, Houdini, Sam Crow, Silver Citizen, and Tres Friends were scratched.
