Alfredo Castro Rea Classic
LOUISIANA RUN
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
From this year forward, the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horseman added to its book of stakes this race
as a posthumous tribute to Alfredo Castro Rea, breeder of sprinters in the State of Tabasco, where he founded Rancho Santa Elena. It is
an open competition for two-year-old run- ners with a 400-yard run that had a prize of 1,149,400 pesos (approximately $56,120 US).
In this first edition of the race, 28 appli- cants were registered for the attractive purse and saw action on Oct. 23 for the trials in order to obtain the 10 finalists. Among them was Enthusiastique of the Cuadra Armadillo, clocking in at :19.573 for the fastest qualifying mark, followed closely by Tempting Splash Dash (:19.660) and Louisiana Run (:19.670), with a similar order in the betting preferences to win the finals.
With the withdrawal of Coffee Cartel and Beer Wagon, the list was reduced to eight contenders, all bred in the United States. They looked spectacular being saddled and during the presentation to the public, matching the quality of this race.
Once the formalities had been completed, the race began and all of the competitors threw themselves into the arena, starting an exciting battle since the margins of difference between
them from the start made it very difficult to distinguish the winner. It was in the final stride that Louisiana Run accelerated. After a photo finish, the filly managed to put her head in front of Great Time (#10), who in turn stuck his nose in front of Carl Fourteen (#5). It was a sensa- tional arrival to the wire.
Veteran rider Juan Carlos
Alvarado was responsible
for sending Louisiana Run at the right time
to come away with the victory, which was achieved in :19.75 for a 90 speed index. The filly of Cuadra Garañones won the “maiden” in her seventh outing and earned for her account $482,748 pesos (approximately $23,570 US). Alvarado came to the race after winning the Mexican Breeders Derby with the red bay Ferdy Ruby.
Louisiana Run is the daughter of the stallion Louisiana Senator and out of the mare Confidential Run (by Check Him Out). The filly was raised in the United States by VWP Jr Inc. Her record shows that she also qualified to the The Prize and Jodys Glory stakes. Now, she earned
her first win against a very competitive group.
The delivery of the tro- phies to the team of Cuadra Garañones was headed by the grandson and great-grand- child of the honoree, Alfredo Castro Rea, originally from the State of Coahuila.
As already mentioned, second place went to the grey colt Grande Tiempo (Big Time Favorite - Power Edge),
who is owned by Cuadra Valeria and who was well ridden by Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez and saddled by Juan José Razo.
The grey colt Carl Fourteen (Ivory James - Sweethearts Lady) placed third for own-
ers Rancho Las Gavias. He was manned by Martín Hernández Bautista and is trained by Angel Gustavo Magdaleno.
Also running in this competitive finals: A Sweeping Triumph (Bedouin Cartel
– Lusi), Cruzin And Boozin (Tempting Dash – Penelope Cruzin), Tempting Splash Dash (Tempting Dash – Thebabeisback), Enthusiastique (Dominyum – Zenergy) & Carters Buff Chick (Carters Cartel – This Chicks Buff).
