LA ESCUINCLE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Mexican Bred Juvenile Challenge is the ultimate contest of the season reserved for two-year-old Mexican runners. A total of 29 individuals fulfilled the conditions and exer- cised their right to participate in the qualifying races held on Oct. 16, which left the 10 final- ists who returned to the stage to run the finals at 350 yards for a Prize of $1,270,370 pesos (approximately $66,495 US).
The qualifying list was led by Orozco Racing’s filly One Rabbit with :17.711, fol- lowed closely by Answer Sambasita, only
four hundredths under (:17.750). The others followed, including La Escuincle of the Cuadra Ceres and the eventual winner of the final contest. The time of :18.024 was good enough to get La Escuincle qualified to compete for the prize of the finals.
Moisés Molina was in the saddle. Although La Escuincle was delayed in the start from gate 1, she soon caught up with the group and made a quick move to lead the route for her nine opponents. Only Estrella
Corona (#9) and One Rabbit (#10) threatened her, but their effort was insufficient as La Escuincle outclassed them to the finish line.
The time of the race was
:17.76 for an 86 speed index
over a fast track. This was
the second victory for the
filly from seven starts. She
also has a second and two
third place finishes. The
daughter of Natovas Prince out of Pascola (by Julies Jet Smooth) was raised in Sinaloa by Guillermo Elizondo Collard, who is the owner of Cuadra Ceres.
The filly made her debut on June 26 in the trials to the Garañones Futurity, but failed to qualify to the finals or consolation. But a week later, she won a 330-yard maiden that was, to date, her only victory. She has always been rid- den by Arturo Sánchez, but in the trials to this stakes she was ridden by Moisés Molina.
La Escuincle is trained
by the veteran José de Jesús Valdivia. For this victory, the filly increased her account to 584,370 pesos (approximately $30,546 US). It was a praise- worthy achievement for her breeder and owner, who has many years in the industry of breeding and competition of fast and purebred horses.
It is important to mention that this is the third year of this race, exclusive
to Mexico, which has a support of $10,000 from the American Quarter Horse Association.
Estrella Corona (Sambaso Dancer - Saqqara) took second place for Cuadra Shambala under the support of Yair Daniel Báez for trainer Jose Ravel Baltazar.
One Rabbit (Rabbits Rainbow - Woodys Wild One) took third place under Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez for Cuadra Orozco Racing and trainer Pedro Ríos Torres.
