Z Wayne Griffin Dir. Trial Div. 1
ZOOMIN FOR SPUDS
by Michael Compton
With five guaranteed berths to the $600,000 Champion of Champions on the line, the Z Wayne Griffin Directors Trials (run in two divi- sions) at Los Alamitos on Nov. 13 were important stepping stones to the 44th running of the lucrative Dec. 10 event.
When the dust settled after the first division, Zoomin For Spuds proved best, punching his ticket to the Champion of Champions with a strong effort for owner Jim Walker and trainer Monty Arrossa. Ridden by Cruz Mendez, Zoomin For Spuds broke well from the 1-post and rolled to a 1/2-length score, stopping the timer in :19.695 for the 400 yards.
Zoomin For Spuds relishes Los Alamitos. He owns five stakes wins over the surface in 2016 and has now won 3 consecutive races, all stakes. The victory improved his record to 17—7(6)-6-3(1) and increased his earnings to $115,543.
Zoomin For Bux was bred in Idaho by owner Jim Walker out of winner A Perfect Cocktail, dam of 100% money earners from four starters including multiple stakes winners Bux For Cocktail and Jesses Perfect One. Zoomin For Bux is her top earner.
Militarist (Favorite Cartel-Hawk Kue Pie) finished second under Cesar DeAlba for owner Steve Burns DVM and trainer Michael Casselman. Militarist also earned a berth to the Champion of Champions event. Heat Warning (A Regal Choice- Its A Dry Heat TB) and jockey Jorge Bourdieu finished third in the time of :19.843, joining the Champion of Champions field with the fifth-fastest time. The Ralph and Carolyn Fales-owned charge is trained by Matthew Fales.
Viento Negro (First Moonflash-Coup Of Corona), Eyesa Famous Eagle (One Famous Eagle- Eyesa Glass), BF Farm Boss (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly) and Fiery Kimbo (Walk Thru Fire-Kimbo With Class) completed the order of finish.

RITE REGAL
by Michael Compton
Agem of consistency his entire racing career, Rite Regal has a nose for the finish line. The 3-year-old gelding displayed his tenacity once again, winning the 2nd division of the Z Wayne Griffin Directors Trials at Los Alamitos on Nov. 13. In winning for the 10th time in a stellar career, Rite Regal secured his place in the starting gate for the $600,000 Champion of Champions on Dec. 10.
With Cruz Mendez riding for owner Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC and trainer Jose Flores, Rite Regal led from the gate to the wire to finish a head in front. They crossed the wire in :19.830 for the 400 yards to earn a 90 speed index. All of this just one week after finishing second in the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1.
“He really has a heart, this horse,” said Flores who is expected to also saddle defending Champion of Champions winner Heza Dasha Fire in the big race. “He really showed me he has more heart than anything. It’s fun to have one, but it’s even better when you have two.”
Rite Regal was bred in California by Steve D. Burns DVM out of unraced A Regal Classic. She has produced 100% money earners/winners from two starters. Rite Regal is the top earner out of the mare and her first stakes winner.
Forget It (Foose-Forget Him) finished second under G. Rangel for owner Hector M. Villalobos and trainer Jose Moreno.
Freakin Runaway (Ocean Runaway-Streakin Freakin) finished a close third under rider Rodrigo Aceves for owner Michael S. Amburn and trainer Mike Robbins.
Little Talks (Favorite Cartel-Babe On The Fly) was 4th and was followed by Dutcher (Apollitical Jess-Louisiana Eye Opener), Far Niente (FDD Dynasty-Shahayla) and El Duero (Oak Tree Special-La Jolla Rocket).
