The photo on page 161 shows Special Leader and jockey Kenny Hart after winning the Grade 1 Champion of Champions-G1 for owner/ breeder Joe Kirk Fulton at Los Alamitos on Dec. 21, 1991. The favorite in the race was Refrigerator, who was the previous year’s Champion 2-Year- Old Gelding and then the 1992 and 1993 World Champion. Special Leader, trained by Mike Robbins, scored a neck win with a driving finish while Refrigerator finished third a neck behind Isaws Sugar Bear, who became the 1991 Champion Aged Mare. Others in the race, which is a top contest for the industry’s older horses, were Champions Apprehend, Jazzing Hi, See Me Gone, and Takin On The Cash.
Said Robbins after the race, “I honestly think this was one of the best Champion of Champions fields I’ve seen . . . They were all quality horses and they all got out there and worked.” Robbins had previously won two other Champion of Champions with World Champions Sgt Pepper Feature and Dashs Dream.
Special Leader (Special Effort-Miss Eye Opener, Dash For Cash) was part of a pair of horses in the Champion of Champions owned by Fulton and trained by Robbins. The other was Reckless Dash. The two colts were born the same year and at the same place, and they were traveling buddies and stablemates their entire lives.
Special Leader, who earlier in 1991 won the All American Gold Cup-G1, was named the 1991 World Champion, Champion Aged Horse, Champion Aged Stallion.
The 1987 bay stallion retired after his win in the Champion of Champions with a record of 18-7(2)-4(3)-2(1) from 18 starts and earnings of $292,605.
