Zia Futurity-RG1
JESS FIRE CHICK
by Danny Camp
Jess Fire Chick notched her second stakes victory in the $409,680 Zia Futurity-RG1 at Ruidoso Downs on July 29.
Adrian Ramos is riding first call on Jess Fire Chick, he has won three in a row on the filly, including her July 14 trial heat to the Zia Futurity-RG1.
In the finals Adrian opted to ride Zee James. Enter Agustin Silva. He didn’t qualify any to the finals, so he was available and his lucky penny showed up.
Agustin Silva and Jess Fire Chick broke from the 8-post in second. The filly grabbed the lead by the top of the stretch.
They were able to finish 1/2-length in front, stopping the clock in :20.148 for the 400 yard race while facing a 16-mph headwind. That effort resulted in a 83 speed index.
Jess Fire Chick brought home the $172,065 winner’s share of the purse for owners Mike Abraham & Paul Blanchard and trainer Wesley Giles, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $322,040. She remains undefeated in four starts.
Jess Fire Chick won her Mountain Top Futurity trial in her debut and then contin- ued on to win the $345,655 Mountain Top Futurity-G3.
Abraham bred Jess Fire Chick out of 2013 Mountain Top Futurity-RG3 winner Required
Fire. She has produced
100% winners from two starters, including Flash Moonfire, who placed second in the 2017 Mountain Top Futurity-RG3 and fourth
in the New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2. Jess Fire Chick is the first stakes winner of the brood and the top earner.
Wes Giles chimed in
about the filly, “She’s easy to
be around and even easier on
the eyes. Lucas Chavez broke this filly and he did a really good job.
“When she got here, she was ready for some speed work,” he continued.
“She never really had a problem with the altitude here and she adjusted well. We really didn’t know what we had until her first out.
“After that we knew she was as good as she looks. When she loads up in the gate she looks down the track and is on point, she doesn’t make mistakes. Her best lick is the first jump away from there, she is very quick,” he explained.
“She will give you every ounce of run she has in her and after the race she is exhausted. The filly pulled up good after the futurity, she ate all her feed and seems bright.”
When asked about the future Wes added, “We
are looking to take her to Albuquerque I think she will do well there. Paul and Mike are on board with that they are great owners.”
Midnite Blu (First Moonflash-The Blues Girl) was a bit tardy at the break, but made up enough ground under rider G.R. Carter Jr. to pocket the second place
money for owner Too for Two and trainer Wesley Giles.
CD Mamas Boy (First Moonflash-Mama Rosa B) and Jose Ortiz overcame a bad start by making a great run up the lane. The photo showed he was in third place. He is owned by Daniel Ramirez and trained by Juan Esquivel.
Regard The The Sevens (Chicks Regard- Seven Coronas), Sister Sophia (Big Daddy Cartel-Ella Sophia), Zee James (Jesse
James Jr-On A Bunny), Kunde (Jesse James Jr-Tangled Vines), No Mires A La Luna (Firstmoonflash-Don’t Looke Ethel), June Bug Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Sandy June Bug) and Fireball Flash (First Moonflash-Runaway Dashing) completed the order of finish.
