DIAMONDS BLUE EYE
by Tracy Gantz
Diamonds Blue Eye has yet to string his vic- tories together, but he made his stakes debut count. On California Breeders Champion Night
at Los Alamitos, the gelding came home first in the $25,000 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes on July 28.
Breaking out of the gate on top, Diamonds Blue Eye lugged out early. Jockey Jonathan Roman was able to overcome any disadvantage, however, and he and Diamonds Blue Eye received every call to reach the finished 1 1/4-lengths ahead in :19.815 for 400 yards, posting a 91 speed index.
Jesus Nunez trains Diamonds Blue Eye for Enrique Gonzalez’s EG High Desert Farms. Diamonds Blue Eye broke his maiden in his debut last year and added an allowance victory in May.
Diamonds Blue Eye is out of EG High Desert homebred Letty Bail Regis Out, who won the California Breeders Debutante in 2012. The mare has produced 100% winners from two starters, including Bail Czech. Diamonds Blue Eye is her first stakes winner.
Cruz Mendez rode Jess Bet Me (One Sweet Jess-Miss Kittys Bar Bet) to second for owners Herasmo & Salvador Hernandez and trainer Rodolfo Viramontes. Since Viramontes began training the gelding, Jess Bet Me broke his maiden and finished second in an allowance race.
The Revenant (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose) finished third under jockey Ramon Sanchez for owner Ron Hartley and trainer John Cooper. Twice third in earlier stakes, The Revenant is a full brother to Powerful Favorite, who won the Governor’s Cup Futurity-G1 on the same card.
Walk It Man (Walk Thru Fire-Attack The Cartel) finished fourth, and Fyrefly Jo (Walk Thru Fire-Jenuine Joy) ran fifth. Power Thinker was scratched.
Calif. Brds.’ Sprint Stakes
UNO CORONA MAS
by Tracy Gantz
Elena Andrade did well with offspring of the mare Corona Mas Fina on California Breeders Champion Night at Los Alamitos July 28. Jess Mas
finished third in the California Breeders Matron Stakes-RG3, and Uno Corona Mas won the $25,000 California Breeders Sprint Stakes.
In the 350-yard Sprint, jockey Carlos Huerta broke Uno Corona Mas on top. Though nearly the entire field bunched up, with only necks and heads separating them, Uno Corona Mas never relin- quished his lead.
He came to the wire a head in front, stopping the clock in :17.686 for a 92 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total earnings to $124,247.
Winner of the 2016 Southern California Derby-G2, Uno Corona Mas was away from the races from the middle of last year until this April. He had finished third once in three starts since the layoff. He was also fourth in the 2016 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 as well as the 2017 Independence Day Handicap-G3.
Andrade bred the colt out of stakes-placed Corona Mas Fina. She has produced six winners in eight starters, including stakes-placed Mucho Fuego. Uno Corona Mas is her first stakes winner.
G S Wintermeyer (Favorite Cartel-My Donna Doll) finished in second place under jockey Eduardo Nicasio for owner Oscar Parra and trainer Valentin Zamudio.
Rodrigo Aceves rode Still Trying (Kiddy Up-Down Not Out) to third for owner Juan Humberto and trainer Jose Flores.

Calif. Brds.’ 550 Stakes
ROCKIN ASTEROID
by Tracy Gantz
With just over half the year gone, Rockin Asteroid has already started 10 times. He usu- ally gets a check, and he nabbed the biggest one in the $20,000 California Breeders’ 550 Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 28.
Several horses bumped hard when the gate opened. Rockin Asteroid, in the 2-post, avoided
the trouble. With Carlos Huerta aboard, he dueled with Well Good before pulling away to win by a 1/2-length. They completed the 550 yards in :27.200 in the hand-timed race, posting a 107 speed index.
John Cooper trains Rockin Asteroid for owner Maria Gomez. This was the 3-year-old gelding’s first victory of the year, though he has placed in four other races and was a finalist in the 2017 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G2 and 2018 El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3.
The Parsons Ranch bred Rockin Asteroid in California and began racing him last year. Cooper claimed the gelding for $20,000 last August.
Rockin Asteroid is out of the Thoroughbred mare Five Star Cruise, who earned $60,983 primar- ily in the claiming ranks. She has produced 100% money earners from three starters. Rockin Asteroid is her first winner.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Well Good (Kiddy Up-How Good) ran second under jockey Vinnie Bednar for trainer Scott Willoughby.Newport Coaster (TR Dasher-Wave Babe) and Ruben Lozano were third for owner Herminia Gutierrez and trainer Justin Clark. Myfavoritestreaker (Favorite Cartel-Checkoutthestreaker) finished fourth.
